Luk 1:1 Whereas several have undertaken to draw up a narrative of those transactions, which pass'd among us;
Luk 1:2 according as they were delivered to us by persons, who were all along eye-witnesses, and had a share in the transactions themselves:
Luk 1:3 I have likewise thought proper; most excellent Theophilus, to write to you a particular account; having made a very diligent inquiry into the whole matter,
Luk 1:4 that you may have a distinct view of those things about which you have been inform'd.
Luk 1:5 In the time of Herod, the king of Judea, there was a certain priest, named Zacharias, of the family of Abia, whose wife; nam'd Elizabeth, was of the race of Aaron:
Luk 1:6 they were both of them sincerely pious; observing all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord; with unspotted reputation.
Luk 1:7 they had no children, because Elizabeth was steril, and they were both advanced in years.
Luk 1:8 now Zachary was to officiate in divine service, in the order of his family,
Luk 1:9 and according to the custom of distributing the parts, it fell to his lot to burn incense in the sanctuary.
Luk 1:10 and all the congregation of the people stood praying without, at the time of offering incense,
Luk 1:11 when there appear'd to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the incense-altar.
Luk 1:12 Zacharias startled at the sight and was seized with fear.
Luk 1:13 but the angel said to Zacharias, don't be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard: and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son, whom you shall name John:
Luk 1:14 he shall be your joy and transport, and numbers shall rejoice at his birth.
Luk 1:15 he shall appear as a divine messenger. he shall drink neither wine, nor any other strong liquor: he shall be filled with the holy spirit, even from his infancy:
Luk 1:16 he shall convert many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.
Luk 1:17 and he shall march before him, in the spirit and power of Elias, to reconcile parents and children together, and the unruly to the practice of justice, that the people may be duly dispos'd to receive the Lord.
Luk 1:18 But Zacharias said to the angel, by what sign shall I know this? for I am old, and my wife is of a great age.
Luk 1:19 the angel replied, I am Gabriel, who attend in the presence of God, and am sent to communicate to you this agreeable message.
Luk 1:20 you shall now become dumb and not recover your speech, till the very day when these things shall happen; because you distrusted my words, which in due time shall have their effect.
Luk 1:21 In the mean time the people were waiting for Zacharias, and wonder'd at his tarrying so long in the temple.
Luk 1:22 but when he came out, he could not speak to them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; for he intimated it to them by signs, and continued dumb.
Luk 1:23 and the time of his officiating being ended, he departed to his own house.
Luk 1:24 Some time after, Elizabeth his wife was pregnant, and went into retirement for five months.
Luk 1:25 it is the Lord, said she, who has thus favour'd me, at the time when he took care to remove the reproach I was under among men.
Luk 1:26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
Luk 1:27 to a virgin contracted to a man; whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. and the virgin's name was Mary.
Luk 1:28 the angel, upon his arrival, said to her; "Hail, favorite of heaven, the Lord is with thee: thou happiest of thy sex."
Luk 1:29 Mary was surpriz'd at the voice of such an appearance, and wonder'd what the meaning of this salutation should be.
Luk 1:30 but the angel said to her, "Mary, be not afraid: for you are the object of divine favour.
Luk 1:31 you shall be now pregnant, and be delivered of a son, whom you shall name JESUS.
Luk 1:32 he shall be great, he shall be the son of the most high. the Lord God shall give him the throne of his father David.
Luk 1:33 he shall reign over the house of Jacob, and of his kingdom there shall be no end."
Luk 1:34 Then said Mary to the angel, what shall this be without any intercourse with man?
Luk 1:35 the angel answered her, "the holy spirit shall descend upon thee, and the power of the most high shall over-shadow thee: wherefore thy holy offspring shall be called the son of God.
Luk 1:36 even your cousin Elizabeth, as old as she is, is become pregnant with a son: she, who was stiled barren, is now in her sixth month;
Luk 1:37 for nothing is impossible to God."
Luk 1:38 then said Mary, "behold the servant of the Lord, be it unto me according to thy word." upon which the angel disappeared.
Luk 1:39 Soon after this, Mary departed, and made an expeditious journey to a city of Juda, in the mountains:
Luk 1:40 where entring into the house of Zacharias, she saluted Elizabeth.
Luk 1:41 no sooner had Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, but the babe leap'd within her:
Luk 1:42 and Elizabeth divinely inspired, broke out into this acclamation.
Luk 1:43 "Blessed mother of the most blessed offspring! what an honour is this, that I should be visited by the mother of our Lord!
Luk 1:44 no sooner did the sound of your salutation strike mine ear, than the babe leap'd within me for joy.
Luk 1:45 blessed is she that has believed; for what she has heard from the Lord, shall be accomplished."
Luk 1:46 Then Mary said, "my soul doth magnify the Lord,
Luk 1:47 and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my saviour,
Luk 1:48 for he hath regarded the low estate of his servant: and future ages shall proclaim me blessed.
Luk 1:49 the almighty hath distinguish'd me by the greatest marks of favour: his name be for ever reverenc'd.
Luk 1:50 his mercy is on them that fear him, from generation to generation.
Luk 1:51 he hath displayed the strength of his arm, and has confounded the proud by the devices of their hearts.
Luk 1:52 he has cast down princes from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree,
Luk 1:53 the needy he has furnished with plentiful enjoyments, and the rich he has reduced to poverty.
Luk 1:54 he has taken Israel his servant into his protection, in pursuance of the mercy,
Luk 1:55 which he promised to our forefathers, to Abraham, and to his posterity for ever."
Luk 1:56 Now Mary stay'd about three months with Elizabeth, and then return'd to her own house.
Luk 1:57 When Elizabeth had gone her full time, she was delivered of a son.
Luk 1:58 her neighbours and her relations having heard how the Lord had heap'd his favours upon her, they congratulated with her:
Luk 1:59 and on the eighth day were present at the circumcision of the child. but upon their proposing to call him by his father's name, Zacharias: his mother objected to it,
Luk 1:60 and said, no, he shall be called John.
Luk 1:61 they answered her, there is not any of your family of that name.
Luk 1:62 they therefore ask'd his father to signify how he would have him call'd.
Luk 1:63 then he made signs for a writing-book, and writ these words, "his name is John:" at which they were all surprized.
Luk 1:64 immediately he had the use of his speech: and he uttered himself in praises to God.
Luk 1:65 All the neighbourhood were struck with reverence, and the rumour of these events ran thro' all the mountains of Judea,
Luk 1:66 and made an impression upon all that heard of them. what a child will this be? said they, for the divine influence does attend him.
Luk 1:67 Then Zacharias his father, inspired by the holy spirit, vented his divine enthusiasm in these words.
Luk 1:68 "blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he hath regarded and wrought a deliverance for his people:
Luk 1:69 he hath rais'd up a powerful saviour for us, in the family of his servant David,
Luk 1:70 according to the antient promise he made by the mouth of the holy prophets,
Luk 1:71 to deliver us from our enemies, and from the power of all that hate us:
Luk 1:72 to show regard to our forefathers, in performing his holy covenant,
Luk 1:73 the oath which he made to our father Abraham, to grant us this favour,
Luk 1:74 that we should be delivered from the power of our enemies, and serve him with security,
Luk 1:75 in the sincere practice of holiness and justice, all our days.
Luk 1:76 and you, dear babe, you shall be the prophet of the most high: for you shall go before the Lord, in order to prepare his way,
Luk 1:77 by acquainting his people how they may be saved by the remission of their sins,
Luk 1:78 through the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun has visited us from on high,
Luk 1:79 to enlighten those, who are in darkness, and in the shadow of death, and to direct our steps into the ways of peace."
Luk 1:80 Now the child continued to grow, and greatly improv'd in sense; and was in the desarts till the time, when he was to be manifested to Israel.

Luk 2:1 At that time, Cesar Augustus published an edict, to make a register of the Roman empire.
Luk 2:2 (this register was made before Quirinus was prefect of Syria.)
Luk 2:3 all went to be registred, every one to his native city.
Luk 2:4 so Joseph departed from Nazareth in Galilee, and went into Judea to the city of David, called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and linage of David,
Luk 2:5 in order to be registred with Mary, his espoused wife, who was then big with child.
Luk 2:6 now while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered.
Luk 2:7 and being brought to bed of her first born, she swathed him, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Luk 2:8 In that country there were shepherds lying in the open fields, taking their turns to watch the stock in the night;
Luk 2:9 when all of a sudden an angel of the Lord appear'd to them, and a heavenly light shone about them, at which they were greatly affrighted.
Luk 2:10 but the angel said to them, be not afraid, I am only come to bring you great news, which will be matter of joy to you and to the whole world.
Luk 2:11 for the Lord Messiah your saviour is this day born, in the city of David:
Luk 2:12 and by this sign shall you know him; you will find the babe swathed, lying in a manger.
Luk 2:13 All of a sudden an army of celestial beings join'd the angel, singing praises to God, and saying,
Luk 2:14 "glory to God in the heavens, and to men on earth felicity in the divine favour."
Luk 2:15 As soon as the angels retired back to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, let us go to Bethlehem, to see the fact, of which the Lord inform'd us.
Luk 2:16 accordingly they hasted thither, and found Mary and Joseph with the babe lying in the manger.
Luk 2:17 when they had seen him, they divulged what the angel had told them concerning this child.
Luk 2:18 and all that heard of it, were surprized at what the shepherds related.
Luk 2:19 but Mary considered these things very attentively, and weigh'd every circumstance in her mind, while the shepherds return'd,
Luk 2:20 glorifying and praising God, for having heard and seen every thing exactly as the angel inform'd them.
Luk 2:21 The eighth day, when the child was to be circumcised, being come, he was named Jesus, the name, which the angel had given before his conception.
Luk 2:22 At length the time appointed by the law of Moses for the purification of women being accomplish'd, they carried the infant to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, according as his law directs ,
Luk 2:23 "every first born male-child shall be consecrated to the Lord."
Luk 2:24 and to offer the sacrifice prescrib'd by the law, which was a pair of turtle-doves, or two young pidgeons.
Luk 2:25 At that time there dwelt at Jerusalem one Simeon, an honest, religious man, one who expected the appearance of the Messiah, and was endued with the spirit of prophecy.
Luk 2:26 to him it was revealed by the holy spirit, that he should not die till he had seen the Messiah of the Lord.
Luk 2:27 by the divine direction he came into the temple, just as the parents of Jesus were bringing in the child to perform what the law required in his behalf.
Luk 2:28 then he took him up in his arms, and returned thanks to God in these words, "now,
Luk 2:29 Lord, thou wilt grant thy servant a happy death, according to thy promise.
Luk 2:30 for mine eyes have beheld the saviour,
Luk 2:31 whom thou hast provided for all mankind, a light to lighten the Gentiles,
Luk 2:32 and the glory of thy people Israel."
Luk 2:33 Joseph and the mother of Jesus were surprized to hear such things pronounc'd concerning him.
Luk 2:34 then Simeon gave them his benediction, and said to Mary his mother, "the child you now see, shall occasion many in Israel to fall and rise again; he will be the Object of calumny,
Luk 2:35 which like a dart will pierce even thro' your own soul, that thereby the sincerity of many may be revealed."
Luk 2:36 There was likewise one Anna a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser; she was of a great age, and had liv'd in a married state but seven years ever since she was a virgin:
Luk 2:37 being then a widow of about fourscore and four years old: she was assiduously in the temple, night and day religiously employ'd in fastings and prayers:
Luk 2:38 and happening to come in just at the same time, she likewise express'd her thanks to the lord, and spoke of Jesus to all those, who expected deliverance in Jerusalem.
Luk 2:39 and when they had performed every thing required by the divine law, they returned into Galilee, to Nazareth their city.
Luk 2:40 and the child grew in stature and in all the improvements of the mind; he was stor'd with wisdom, and was the object of divine favour.
Luk 2:41 Now his parents went every year to Jerusalem at the paschal feast.
Luk 2:42 when Jesus therefore was twelve years old they went thither, as was customary at the time of that festival.
Luk 2:43 when that was expired, they returned, but the young Jesus staid behind in Jerusalem, without being miss'd either by Joseph or his Mother.
Luk 2:44 so that they went a whole day's journey, imagining he was somewhere among the company, and then they look'd for him among their relations and acquaintance; but not finding him,
Luk 2:45 they turn'd back to Jerusalem to enquire for him there.
Luk 2:46 three days after they found him in the temple, sitting near the doctors, attending to them and asking them questions.
Luk 2:47 and all that heard him were astonish'd at his understanding and answers.
Luk 2:48 when Joseph and his mother saw him, great was their surprize: and his mother said to him, son, why did you leave us thus? your father and I have been looking for you with great concern.
Luk 2:49 Jesus replied, why were ye so sollicitous about me? don't you know that 'tis my business to be in my father's house?
Luk 2:50 but they did not comprehend the meaning of that expression.
Luk 2:51 However Jesus went down with them to Nazareth, and was subject to them: and his mother kept all these things in her heart.
Luk 2:52 in the mean time Jesus increas'd in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

Luk 3:1 In the fifteenth year of the emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea; Herod tetrarch of Gallilee: Philip his brother tetrarch of Iturea and Trachonitis: and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene:
Luk 3:2 under the pontificate of Annas and Caiaphas, JOHN, the son of Zacharias, received his divine commission in the wilderness.
Luk 3:3 in pursuance of which, he went into all the country about Jordan, exhorting all to repent and be baptized, in order to obtain the remission of their sins.
Luk 3:4 as it is written in the book of the prophecies of Esaias , "the voice of one crying in the desart, prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths clear.
Luk 3:5 every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be level'd: the crooked shall be made strait, and the rough ways shall be made smooth,
Luk 3:6 and all men shall behold the divine saviour."
Luk 3:7 he said therefore to the people that crowded to be baptized by him, ye brood of vipers, who has prompted you to flee from approaching wrath?
Luk 3:8 let your actions therefore show your repentance, and don't pretend to say within yourselves, "we have Abraham for our father:" for I tell you that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
Luk 3:9 the ax is already laid to the root of the trees: every tree then, which does not produce good fruit, shall be hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Luk 3:10 Upon which the people asked him, what then shall we do?
Luk 3:11 he answer'd them, let him that hath two coats give one to him that hath none; and let him that has plenty of provisions act in like manner.
Luk 3:12 the Publicans likewise came to be baptized, and said to him, master, how are we to act?
Luk 3:13 exact, said he, no more than what the law requires.
Luk 3:14 the soldiers too made the same demand, how are we to act? he answer'd them, injure no man either by violence or by fraud, and be content with your pay.
Luk 3:15 As the people were in suspence, every man imagining in his own mind that John might be the Messiah;
Luk 3:16 he address'd himself to them all, saying, I indeed baptize you with water; but there is one coming, who is superiour to me, whose shoes I am unworthy to untie: he shall baptize you with the holy spirit, under the appearance of fire.
Luk 3:17 and with the fan in his hand he will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and will lay up the wheat in his grainery: but the chaff he will burn with inextinguishable fire.
Luk 3:18 many other things he delivered to the people in his exhortations.
Luk 3:19 but having reproved Herod the tetrarch upon account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, and for all the mischiefs that Herod had done;
Luk 3:20 to compleat all the rest, Herod confin'd John in prison.
Luk 3:21 When all the people were baptizing, Jesus was likewise baptized, and whilst he was praying, the clouds opened,
Luk 3:22 and the holy spirit descended upon him in a corporeal form like a dove. and a voice came from heaven, which said, thou art my beloved son, in thee I am well pleased.
Luk 3:23 Jesus was then about thirty years of age, being, as was suppos'd, the son of Joseph,
Luk 3:24 son of Heli, son of Matthat, son of Levi, son of Melchi, son of Janna, son of Joseph,
Luk 3:25 son of Mattathias, son of Amos, son of Naum, son of Esli, son of Nagge,
Luk 3:26 son of Maath, son of Mattathias, son of Semi, son of Joseph, son of Juda, son of Joanna,
Luk 3:27 son of Rhesa, son of Zorobabel, son of Salathiel,
Luk 3:28 son of Neri, son of Melchi, son of Addi, son of Cosam, son of Elmodam, son of Er,
Luk 3:29 son of Jose, son of Eliezer, son of Jorim, son of Matthat, son of Levi, son of Simeon,
Luk 3:30 son of Juda, son of Joseph, son of Jonan, son of Eliakim,
Luk 3:31 son of Melea, son of Menan, son of Mattatha, son of Nathan, son of David,
Luk 3:32 son of Jesse, son of Obed, son of Booz, son of Salmon,
Luk 3:33 son of Naasson, son of Aminadab, son of Aram, son of Esrom, son of Phares, son of Juda,
Luk 3:34 son of Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham, son of Thara, son of Nachor, son of Saruch,
Luk 3:35 son of Ragau, son of Phalec, son of Heber, son of Sala,
Luk 3:36 son of Cainan, son of Arphaxad, son of Sem, son of Noe, son of Lamech, son of Mathusala,
Luk 3:37 son of Enoch, son of Jared, son of Maleleel,
Luk 3:38 son of Cainan, son of Enos, son of Seth, son of Adam, the son of God.

Luk 4:1 Now Jesus being full of the holy spirit, return'd from Jordan, and was led by the spirit into the desart,
Luk 4:2 being forty days tempted by the devil, without eating any thing all that while: but that time expired, he at last was seiz'd with hunger.
Luk 4:3 then the devil said to him; if you are the son of God, command this stone to become bread.
Luk 4:4 but Jesus answered him, it is written , "man shall not live by bread alone, but by every thing that God appoints."
Luk 4:5 then the devil took him to the top of a high mountain, and in an instant represented to him all the kingdoms of the world.
Luk 4:6 all this power, said he, will I give thee, and the glory of them: for they are at my disposal, and where I please, I bestow them.
Luk 4:7 if therefore you will worship me, they shall be all your own.
Luk 4:8 but Jesus answered him, avant, satan, for it is written, "thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve."
Luk 4:9 next, the devil brought him to Jerusalem, and setting him on the battlements of the temple, said to him, if you be the son of God, throw your self down from this height,
Luk 4:10 for it is written, "he shall charge his angels to watch for your preservation:
Luk 4:11 and they shall bear you up in their hands, for fear your foot should hit against a stone."
Luk 4:12 but Jesus replied, it is said, "thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."
Luk 4:13 and when the whole temptation was ended, the devil left him for a time.
Luk 4:14 Jesus return'd by the influence of the spirit into Galilee, where his same quickly spread over all the country;
Luk 4:15 for he preach'd in their synagogues with universal applause.
Luk 4:16 being come to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; according to his custom, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath-day, and standing up to read,
Luk 4:17 they delivered to him the book of the prophet Esaias, and upon opening the book, that passage occurr'd, where it is written,
Luk 4:18 "the spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted,
Luk 4:19 to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to proclaim the favourable year of the Lord."
Luk 4:20 then he closed the book, and returning it to the minister, he sat down: and as the eyes of the whole synagogue were fix'd with attention upon him,
Luk 4:21 he undertook to show them, how the passage they had heard, was actually then accomplished.
Luk 4:22 They all applauded him, and were surprized, that what he said, was delivered with so much grace. but they objected, is not this the son of Joseph?
Luk 4:23 upon which he said, no doubt you will urge me with this proverb, "physician heal thy self. what we have heard you perform'd in Capernaum, do likewise here in your own country."
Luk 4:24 but in truth, added he, no prophet was ever well received in his own country.
Luk 4:25 I assure you, though there were many widows in Israel, when the heaven had furnished no rain for three years and a half, and a great famine spread through all the land:
Luk 4:26 yet to none of them was Elias sent, except to one widow in Sarepta, a city of Sidon.
Luk 4:27 and there were many lepers in the time of Elisha the prophet: yet none of them obtain'd a cure, except Naaman the Syrian.
Luk 4:28 upon hearing this, the whole synagogue were incensed against him.
Luk 4:29 and breaking up the assembly, they drove him out of the city, to the precipice of the hill, upon which it was built, in order to throw him headlong down.
Luk 4:30 but he pass'd thro' the midst of them and went away.
Luk 4:31 At length he went to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath-days.
Luk 4:32 and they were astonished at his doctrine, for he spoke with authority.
Luk 4:33 now there was in the synagogue a man possess'd with the spirit of an impure demon, who roar'd out, in these words, let us alone;
Luk 4:34 what business have you with us, Jesus of Nazareth? are you come to destroy us? I know who you are; the saint of God.
Luk 4:35 but Jesus rebuk'd him, saying, be dumb, and come out of him. upon which the demon threw him down in the midst of the assembly, and came out, without doing him any harm.
Luk 4:36 and they were all amazed, and said to one another, what's the meaning of this? with authority and power he commands the impure spirits, and they come out!
Luk 4:37 and his fame spread through all the neighbouring country.
Luk 4:38 When Jesus came out of the synagogue, he went to Simon's house, whose mother-in-law was seized with a violent fever, and they desired him to relieve her.
Luk 4:39 so approaching near her, he order'd the fever to leave her, and it left her. upon which she immediately arose, and waited upon them at table.
Luk 4:40 As soon as the sun was set, all sorts of diseased persons were brought before him by their friends, and he healed them all, by laying his hands upon them.
Luk 4:41 many were dispossess'd of the demons, who cried aloud, you are the Messiah, the son of God. but he rebuked them, and would not suffer them to declare, that they knew him to be the Messiah.
Luk 4:42 When it was day, he retired into a desart place, where the people searching for him, found him out, and as they earnestly press'd him not to leave them,
Luk 4:43 he said to them, I must likewise proclaim the kingdom of God in other cities; for to that end am I sent.
Luk 4:44 accordingly he went preaching in the synagogues through all Galilee.

Luk 5:1 One day, as the people press'd after him to hear his divine preaching, he came near the lake of Gennesereth,
Luk 5:2 where he saw two vessels lying near shore: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
Luk 5:3 he went therefore aboard one of the vessels, which was Simon's, and desired him to bear away a little from land. then he sat down, and preached to the people from the ship.
Luk 5:4 having finished his sermon, he said to Simon, row into deep water, and throw out your nets for a draught.
Luk 5:5 master, said Simon, we have toil'd all the night, without any prize: however, since you give the word, I will throw the net.
Luk 5:6 which being done, they enclosed such a multitude of fish, the net began to break:
Luk 5:7 so they made a signal to their partners in the other ship to come and help them. accordingly they came, and loaded both the boats so with fish that they began to sink.
Luk 5:8 at sight of this, Simon Peter fell on his knees before Jesus, and said, Lord, withdraw from such a sinful man as I:
Luk 5:9 for he, and all the company were frightned at the draught of fish they had taken:
Luk 5:10 so was James too, and John, the sons of Zebedee, both partners with Simon. but Jesus said to Simon, be not afraid; for the future you shall fish for men.
Luk 5:11 then having brought their boats to shore, they left every thing, and followed him.
Luk 5:12 As he was going to one of the cities in that country, a man cover'd all over with leprosy happen'd to meet Jesus, and prostrating himself before him, thus address'd him, Lord, if you will, you can cure me.
Luk 5:13 then Jesus stretch'd out his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou cured. and immediately the leprosy disappear'd:
Luk 5:14 and he charg'd him not to tell any man: but go, said he, present your self to the priest, and offer what the law requires for your purification, that it may be an evidence to them.
Luk 5:15 in the mean time his fame spread so much the more, and a vast multitude flock'd to hear him, and to be cured of their diseases,
Luk 5:16 so that he retired into places of solitude, for the convenience of prayer.
Luk 5:17 At another time, as he was teaching, it happened that some Pharisees, and doctors of the law were sitting by, who came from the several towns of Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem: when the power of the Lord appear'd in their relief.
Luk 5:18 for instance, they brought a man in his bed lying sick of the palsy: and try'd to. bring him directly into his presence.
Luk 5:19 but when they found it impracticable to bring him in through the crowd, they went up the gallery to the leads, and let him down through the ceiling in his bed among the company, where Jesus was,
Luk 5:20 who perceiving their faith, said to him, O! man, your sins are forgiven you.
Luk 5:21 upon which the Scribes and Pharisees objected among themselves, saying, what a man is this to blaspheme thus? who can forgive sins but God alone?
Luk 5:22 but Jesus perceiving their reflexions, said to them, what do you mean by such insinuations?
Luk 5:23 which is easier, to say, your sins are forgiven you, or to say, rise up, and walk?
Luk 5:24 but that ye may know, that the son of man hath power to forgive sins, rise, said he, to the paralytick, 'tis I command you, take up your bed, and go home.
Luk 5:25 immediately he started up before them all, took up the bed, where he lay, and went home, glorifying God.
Luk 5:26 at this they were all seized with astonishment, and gave thanks to God, crying out with great reverence, what a wonderful instance of power have we seen this day!
Luk 5:27 After this Jesus left the place, and seeing a publican named Levi, sitting at the custom-house, he said to him, follow me.
Luk 5:28 immediately he rose up, left all his affairs, and became his disciple.
Luk 5:29 Levi having prepared a handsom entertainment in his own house for him, a great number of publicans, and others, were likewise at table.
Luk 5:30 but the Scribes and Pharisees of that place reproach'd his disciples, and said, why do ye eat and drink with publicans and scandalous people?
Luk 5:31 but Jesus replied, they that are in health don't want a physician: but they that are sick.
Luk 5:32 I came not to call saints, but sinners to repentance. Then they ask'd him, how comes it that John's disciples,
Luk 5:33 and likewise those of the Pharisees, are frequently fasting and praying, while yours are employed in eating and drinking?
Luk 5:34 to which he answered, would you have the bridemen fast, while the bridegroom is with them?
Luk 5:35 however, the time will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then they will have occasions enow of fasting.
Luk 5:36 Besides, he applied this similitude to them. no man, said he, puts a piece of new cloth upon an old coat: if he does, the new will strain the old, and they will by no means suit one another.
Luk 5:37 nor will any one put new wine into old skins: if they do, the new wine will burst the skins, and wine and skins be all lost.
Luk 5:38 but new wine must be put into new skins, and both will be preserv'd.
Luk 5:39 so no-body that has been drinking old wine, will immediately call for new: for 'tis his maxim, "the old is best."

Luk 6:1 On the second-prime sabbath, as Jesus was passing through the corn-fields, his disciples happen'd to pluck the ears, and rubbing out the corn with their hands began to eat.
Luk 6:2 upon which some of the Pharisees said to them, why do you do what is not allowed to be done on the sabbath-day?
Luk 6:3 but Jesus replied, have you never read what David did, when he and his company were press'd with hunger?
Luk 6:4 how he went into the court of the tabernacle, took and eat the shew-bread, and distributed it likewise to the company, which the law allowed the priests only to eat?
Luk 6:5 the son of man, said he, may dispense even with the sabbath.
Luk 6:6 On another sabbath-day it happen'd, that he went into the synagogue to preach, where a man was present, who had the palsy in his right hand.
Luk 6:7 now the Scribes and Pharisees were upon the watch to see if he would work a cure upon the sabbath-day, and so have matter of accusation against him.
Luk 6:8 but as he knew their thoughts, he said to the man, whose hand was paralytic, rise up, and stand there in the middle. and he arose, and stood before him.
Luk 6:9 then said Jesus to them, I will ask you one question, which is the most allowable on the sabbath-day, to do good, or to neglect it? to save a man's life, or to let him perish?
Luk 6:10 then casting his eyes round the company, he said to the man, stretch out your hand. and he did so: and that hand was as sound as the other.
Luk 6:11 whereupon they fell into a rage, and consulted together, what measures to take against Jesus.
Luk 6:12 About that time, Jesus retired to a mountain to pray, and spent the whole night in an oratory.
Luk 6:13 when it was day, he called his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom he stiled missionarys: Simon,
Luk 6:14 (to whom he gave the name of Peter) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,
Luk 6:15 Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, and Simon surnamed the Zelot,
Luk 6:16 Jude the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, who prov'd the traitor.
Luk 6:17 At length he came down the hill with them, and stayed with the rest of his disciples in the plain, where a great multitude of people from all Judea, from Jerusalem, and the maritime country of Tyre and Sidon, came to hear him, and to have their diseases cured.
Luk 6:18 many that were tormented by evil spirits came likewise, and were cured.
Luk 6:19 so that all the people strove to touch him: for a divine virtue flowed from him, which healed them all.
Luk 6:20 Then directing himself to his disciples, he said, blessed are ye, that are poor: for the divine kingdom is yours.
Luk 6:21 blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be satisfied. blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall find matter of mirth.
Luk 6:22 blessed are you, when men shall hate you, discard you, reproach you, and treat you as infamous, for your attachment to the son of man.
Luk 6:23 then you may triumph with joy; secure of being greatly rewarded in heaven: for such was the treatment the prophets received from their forefathers.
Luk 6:24 But wo unto you that are rich: for you have received your consolation.
Luk 6:25 wo unto you that are full: for you shall be in want. wo unto you that indulge in present pleasure: for mourning and sorrow shall attend you.
Luk 6:26 wo unto you when the generality of men shall applaud you: for so did their forefathers behave to the false prophets.
Luk 6:27 But as for you, who hear me, love your enemies: do good to those, who hate you: bless those, who curse you:
Luk 6:28 and pray for those, who maliciously abuse you.
Luk 6:29 if any one strike you on one cheek, present to him the other likewise: or if any one seize your cloak, surrender your coat also.
Luk 6:30 give to all that ask: and if a man takes away your goods, don't demand them again.
Luk 6:31 behave to others in the same manner, as you desire they would behave to you.
Luk 6:32 for if you only love those, who love you, where's the obligation? the very heathen return love for love.
Luk 6:33 if you return one kind office by another, where's the obligation? the heathen themselves do as much.
Luk 6:34 if you lend with the expectation of gaining by it, where's the obligation? for the heathen lend to one another, for the prospect of an equivalent.
Luk 6:35 but as for you, love your enemies, do good, and lend without expecting any advantage from it: so shall your reward be great, in acting like the children of the most high: for he is kind to the most ungrateful wretches.
Luk 6:36 be ye therefore merciful, as your father is merciful.
Luk 6:37 don't judge others, and you shall not be judged: condemn not, and you shall not be condemned: forgive, and you shall be forgiven.
Luk 6:38 give and you shall receive: they shall pour into your lap good measure, well pressed, heap'd up, and running over. for in the measure you deal with others, you shall be dealt with yourselves.
Luk 6:39 And by way of comparison he said to them, can the blind lead the blind without tumbling both into the ditch?
Luk 6:40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.
Luk 6:41 How comes it, that you can see the mote in your brother's eye, and not see the beam that is in your own eye?
Luk 6:42 or how can you say to your brother, brother, let me take out the mote, that is in your eye, when you your self don't discern the beam that is in your own eye? hypocrite, first remove the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the mote out of your brother's eye.
Luk 6:43 Certainly a good tree does not produce bad fruit: nor does a bad tree produce good fruit.
Luk 6:44 for every tree is known by its fruit: it is not on thorns that men gather figs, nor do they gather grapes on a bramble bush.
Luk 6:45 a good man out of the good treasure of his heart produces what is good: and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart produces what is evil: for 'tis from the abundance of the heart, that the mouth speaketh.
Luk 6:46 Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and do not observe what I say?
Luk 6:47 I will show you, who that man is like, who comes to me, and practises what I prescribe.
Luk 6:48 he is like a man who in building a house, digg'd deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: an inundation came, the current beat impetuously upon that house, but could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
Luk 6:49 but he that does not practise what he hears, is like a man who built his house upon the loose earth without any foundation: the current beat impetuously against it: in the instant down it fell, and great were its ruins.

Luk 7:1 When he had finished this discourse to the populous audience, he entred into Capernaum,
Luk 7:2 where a certain centurion had a servant whom he greatly valued, lying sick and ready to die.
Luk 7:3 this centurion having heard of Jesus's fame, sent several elders of the Jews to intreat him to come, and recover his servant.
Luk 7:4 accordingly they came to Jesus and earnestly pressed him, saying, he very well deserves you should do him this favour; for he loves our nation,
Luk 7:5 and hath built us a synagogue at his own charge.
Luk 7:6 then Jesus went with him, and when he was advanced near the house, the centurion sent some of his friends to him, saying, "Lord, don't give yourself the trouble of coming, I don't deserve you should honour my house with your presence.
Luk 7:7 nor did I think myself worthy to attend you: speak but the word, and my servant shall be cured.
Luk 7:8 for though I am subject to authority, I have soldiers under me: I bid one go, and he goes: I bid another come, and he comes: I bid my servant do this, and he does it."
Luk 7:9 when Jesus heard this, he admired the man, and turning about, he said to the people, that followed him, I assure you, I have not met with such an instance of faith even among the Jews themselves.
Luk 7:10 and they that were sent, being return'd to the house, they found the servant, who had been sick, in good health.
Luk 7:11 The day following, he went into a city called Nain, accompanied by many of his disciples, and a great crowd of people.
Luk 7:12 as he drew near the gate of the city, there was a dead man just then carrying out to be buried, who was his mother's only son, and she a widow: and many people of the town came with her.
Luk 7:13 when the Lord saw her, he was moved with compassion for her, and said to her, don't weep.
Luk 7:14 then advancing, he touch'd the bier, and the bearers standing still, he said, young man, arise, I command you.
Luk 7:15 and the deceased sat up, and began to speak, and Jesus delivered him to his mother.
Luk 7:16 all that were present were seized with dread, and glorified God, saying, a great prophet is risen up among us, and God has visited his people.
Luk 7:17 and his fame spread over all Judea and the neighbouring countrys.
Luk 7:18 John was soon inform'd of these transactions by his disciples,
Luk 7:19 and sent two of them to Jesus, with this question, are you the Messiah, or must we yet wait for some other?
Luk 7:20 accordingly they came to Jesus, and said, John the Baptist sent us to enquire, if you are he that was to come, or must we look for another?
Luk 7:21 at that very time, he cured several of their diseases and distempers, dispossessing evil spirits, and restoring sight to many that were blind.
Luk 7:22 then he gave them this answer, go, and tell John what you have seen, and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are healed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the gospel is proclaim'd to the poor.
Luk 7:23 and blessed is he, who does not make me the occasion of his fall.
Luk 7:24 When the messengers of John were departed, he address'd himself to the people, and said with relation to John, what did you go to see in the desart? a reed shaken with the wind?
Luk 7:25 or did you go to see a man richly apparelled? for magnificent dress and splendid living, you must look into the courts of princes.
Luk 7:26 what then did you go to see? a prophet? yes, I say it, and more than a prophet.
Luk 7:27 he it is, of whom it is written, "behold, I send my messenger before you, who shall prepare the way for you."
Luk 7:28 I declare unto you, among the whole race of mankind, there is not a prophet, who is superiour to John the Baptist: yet he that is most inferiour in the kingdom of the Messiah, is greater than he.
Luk 7:29 all the people, even the publicans, upon hearing him, gave glory to God, by receiving the baptism of John;
Luk 7:30 but the Pharisees and the doctors of the law rejected the divine offers made to them, refusing to be baptized by John.
Luk 7:31 To what therefore shall I compare the men of this generation? who are they like?
Luk 7:32 they are like children playing together in the street, who cry, we have play'd to you on the flute, but you have not danced: we have sung mournful dittys, but you have not lamented.
Luk 7:33 for John the Baptist, when he came, abstain'd from bread and wine; yet you say, he is possess'd with a demon.
Luk 7:34 the son of man appears indifferent to any kind of meat or drink: yet you say, he is a glutton and a tipler, a friend of publicans and loose people.
Luk 7:35 "but wisdom is justified by all her different followers."
Luk 7:36 Jesus being invited to dinner at a certain Pharisee's house, he went home with him, and sat down to table.
Luk 7:37 when a woman of that city, one that had led a loose life, knowing that Jesus was at table in the Pharisee's house, came in with a vial of odoriferous liquor,
Luk 7:38 and stood behind at his feet weeping, bath'd them with her tears, wiped them with her hair, kissed his feet, and poured the perfume upon them.
Luk 7:39 which the Pharisee, who had invited him, observing, he thus argued with himself, if this man were a prophet, he could not but know that the woman, who is so busy with him, is a person of a loose character.
Luk 7:40 in answer to his doubts, Jesus said, Simon, I have something to say to you. master, said he, lets hear it.
Luk 7:41 A certain creditor had two debtors, the one owed five hundred denarys, and the other fifty.
Luk 7:42 having not wherewithal to pay it, he freely discharged them both of the debt. tell me now, which of the two will love him most?
Luk 7:43 I think, said Simon, he that had the greatest debt remitted to him. you are in the right, said Jesus.
Luk 7:44 and turning to the woman, he said to Simon, do you observe this woman? though I am a guest in your house, you never offer'd me any water for my feet: but she has bath'd my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head.
Luk 7:45 you did not salute me, but this woman, since she came in, has been continually kissing my feet.
Luk 7:46 you did not bestow any oil upon my head; but she has poured her rich perfume upon my feet.
Luk 7:47 wherefore, I tell you, her sins, which are numerous, are forgiven; and that is the reason of all this love: but his love is less, to whom less is forgiven.
Luk 7:48 then he said to her, your sins are forgiven.
Luk 7:49 but they who sat at table with him, began to ask one another, who is this, that pretends even to forgive sins?
Luk 7:50 but he said to the woman, your faith hath saved you: go in peace.

Luk 8:1 After this Jesus went about, preaching to every city and village, proclaiming the reign of the Messias, attended by his twelve apostles,
Luk 8:2 and several women, who had been delivered from evil spirits and cured of their diseases: particularly Mary Magdalene, who had been dispossess'd of seven demons:
Luk 8:3 Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's high-steward: Susanna, and several others, who assisted him with their fortunes.
Luk 8:4 A vast number of people being assembled, and crowding to him from all quarters, he thus address'd himself to them by way of parable.
Luk 8:5 a husbandman went out to sow his corn: and as he was sowing, some fell upon the beaten road, which was crush'd under foot, or devoured by the birds.
Luk 8:6 some fell upon very stony ground, which no sooner sprung up, but it wither'd away, for want of moisture:
Luk 8:7 some fell among thorns; but the thorns over-grew it, and starv'd it.
Luk 8:8 but some of the corn fell into good soil, and grew up, yielding a hundred grains for one. then raising his voice he concluded with these words, he that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Luk 8:9 But his disciples having ask'd him the meaning of this parable;
Luk 8:10 he answered, the secret circumstances of the divine dispensation may be clearly revealed to you, but to others only in parables, so that they don't observe what they see, nor comprehend what they hear.
Luk 8:11 now the meaning of the parable is this: the seed sown signifies the word of God.
Luk 8:12 by the beaten road is meant, they who only hear: the word, by the lurking wiles of the devil, being hinder'd from taking root in their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
Luk 8:13 by the stony ground is understood such persons as receive indeed the doctrines they hear, with joy: but for want of resolution, believe only occasionally, and desert when the trial comes.
Luk 8:14 the ground over-run with thorns denotes such as have embraced the doctrine, but are so immerst in the business, enjoyments, and pleasures of life, as not to improve it to any real advantage.
Luk 8:15 but by the good ground is meant such persons as have received the doctrine with simplicity and sincerity, abide by it, and practise it with perseverance.
Luk 8:16 Now, no one lights a lamp to hide it under a vessel, or under a bed: but sets it on a stand, to give light to all the company.
Luk 8:17 whatever is now obscure, shall hereafter be made clear; whatever is now conceal'd, shall then be publickly known.
Luk 8:18 improve therefore what you hear: for he that improves what he has, shall have more; but he that does not, shall lose even that, which he thinks he possesses.
Luk 8:19 One day the mother of Jesus, and his brethren came to speak with him, but could not get near by reason of the crowd.
Luk 8:20 so some of the company said to him, your mother and brethren are waiting without, desiring to see you.
Luk 8:21 but he answered them, my mother and brethren are these, who attend to the word of God, and practise it.
Luk 8:22 The same day Jesus went on board a vessel with his disciples, and said to them, let us pass over to the other side of the lake: and so they put off to sea.
Luk 8:23 while they were rowing, Jesus fell asleep: when there blew such a storm of wind upon the lake, as fill'd the boat with water, and endanger'd their lives.
Luk 8:24 then they came to wake him, crying, master, master, we are sinking. then he rose up, and rebuked the wind, and the waves: and both subside to a calm.
Luk 8:25 but to his disciples he said, where is your faith? while they, seiz'd with fear and admiration, said to one another, who can this man be, that he commands even the winds, and the waves, and they obey?
Luk 8:26 Then they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which lies opposite to Galilee.
Luk 8:27 when he was landed, there met him a man, who belong'd to the city Gadara, and had been for a long time possessed by demons. he did not wear any cloaths, nor dwell in any house, but among the tombs.
Luk 8:28 upon seeing Jesus, he set up a great cry, fell down before him, and roar'd out, what business have you with me, Jesus son of the most high God? I beseech you torment me not.
Luk 8:29 for he had commanded the impure spirit to quit the man, he had so long possessed: who, tho' bound in chains, and fastned with fetters, broke thro' all restraints, and was hurry'd by the demon into the desarts.
Luk 8:30 upon Jesus's saying to him, what is your name? he answer'd, legion, (for many demons were enter'd into him.)
Luk 8:31 and they entreated him not to condemn them to the abyss.
Luk 8:32 but there being a numerous herd of swine feeding on the mountain, they desired he would permit them to enter into the swine, which he granted.
Luk 8:33 accordingly the demons quitted the man, and enter'd into the swine: immediately the herd ran headlong down a precipice into the lake, and were drowned.
Luk 8:34 the keepers seeing this, ran about and spread it, both in town,
Luk 8:35 and country, whence numbers went to see the fact: being come to Jesus, they found the man, who had been dispossess'd of the demons, sitting at Jesus's feet, cloathed, and in his right senses: at which they were much surpriz'd,
Luk 8:36 being inform'd by those that were present, by what means the demoniac had been cured.
Luk 8:37 then the Gadarenes of the adjacent parts unanimously desired him to leave their country: for they were greatly allarm'd. so he embark'd to cross over the lake.
Luk 8:38 now the man, who had been dispossess'd, begg'd to take him with him. but Jesus dismissed him,
Luk 8:39 saying, go home, and relate, what great things God hath done for you. whereupon he departed, and published through all the city, what a wonderful deliverance Jesus had wrought for him.
Luk 8:40 Jesus upon his return was received by a great number of people, who expected him.
Luk 8:41 Some time after, a person nam'd Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, came to Jesus, and upon his knees desired him to come to his house:
Luk 8:42 for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, who lay a dying. as he was on the way, the crowd press'd after him,
Luk 8:43 and among the rest a woman, who had been troubled with an hemorrhage twelve years, having consum'd her whole fortune upon physicians, who could none of them cure her; she getting behind him,
Luk 8:44 touched the border of his garment: and immediately her indisposition was removed.
Luk 8:45 upon which Jesus said, who was it that touch'd me? they being all at a loss, what to answer, at length Peter, and the others with him, said, master, the crowd are squeezing and pressing about you, and yet you cry, "who touch'd me?"
Luk 8:46 but Jesus said, somebody has touched me: for I know what influence my power has had.
Luk 8:47 then the woman finding she could not conceal herself, came trembling, and kneeling down before him, confess'd before all the people, why she had touch'd him, and how she was instantly cured.
Luk 8:48 but he said to her, daughter, don't be under any concern: your faith has sav'd you, go in peace.
Luk 8:49 While he was speaking, somebody came from the ruler of the synagogue's house, who said to him, your daughter is dead; 'tis in vain to importune the master any farther.
Luk 8:50 but when Jesus heard that, he said to Jairus, be not afraid: only believe, and she shall recover.
Luk 8:51 being come to the house, he suffer'd nobody to go into the room with him, except Peter, John and James, and the young woman's father and mother.
Luk 8:52 the company there were all in tears lamenting for her: but he said don't weep; she is not dead, but asleep.
Luk 8:53 upon which, they knowing she was really dead, treated him with derision.
Luk 8:54 but Jesus oblig'd them to withdraw; then grasping her hand, he said, my child, arise.
Luk 8:55 immediately she came to life, and rose up: and he order'd, that something should be given her to eat.
Luk 8:56 and her parents were seized with astonishment: but he charg'd them not to let the fact be known to any one.

Luk 9:1 After this he assembled the twelve apostles, and gave them authority over all sorts of demons, and the power of curing all diseases:
Luk 9:2 then sent them to proclaim the reign of the Messiah, and to heal the sick.
Luk 9:3 and he said to them make no provision for your journey: take neither staff, nor sack, nor bread, nor money; and but one coat for each.
Luk 9:4 when you are lodg'd in any house, there stay, till you leave the place.
Luk 9:5 if any refuse to entertain you, when you leave that city, shake off the dust from your feet, as a sign of their being abandon'd.
Luk 9:6 accordingly they departed, and travell'd thro' the towns, preaching the gospel, and performing cures every where.
Luk 9:7 Now Herod the tetrarch was inform'd of all his transactions: and was perplex'd at the relation of some, that John was risen from the dead: whilst others said, Elias appear'd:
Luk 9:8 and others, that one of the old prophets was come to life again.
Luk 9:9 but Herod said, John was beheaded by my order, who then can this be, who, they say, performs such strange things? and he desired to have a sight of Jesus.
Luk 9:10 The Apostles, upon their return to Jesus, acquainted him with what they had done. and taking them with him, he retired into a desart place over-against the city of Bethsaida:
Luk 9:11 where the people, who were inform'd of it, followed him: which he did not discountenance, but explained to them the reign of the Messiah, and relieved those, who wanted to be cured.
Luk 9:12 As the day began to decline, the twelve came to him, and said, dismiss the multitude, that they may go to the nearest towns and villages for lodging and provisions: for here we are in a desart place.
Luk 9:13 and he said to them, do you yourselves give them something to eat. they replied, we can furnish only five loaves and two fishes, unless we go and buy provisions for all this people:
Luk 9:14 for they were about five thousand. but Jesus said to his disciples, make them sit down by fifties in a company.
Luk 9:15 accordingly they ranged them, and made them all sit down.
Luk 9:16 then he took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he ask'd blessing: then divided them, and gave them to his disciples to be distributed among the people:
Luk 9:17 and tho' they all eat sufficiently, there was a surplusage of twelve baskets full of fragments carried away.
Luk 9:18 One day having retired alone to prayer, he came to his disciples, and ask'd them, saying, whom do the people judge me to be?
Luk 9:19 they answered, some say you are John the Baptist: others, Elias: and others, that you are one of the old prophets appearing again.
Luk 9:20 but who, said he, do you think I am? Peter answered, you are the Messiah of God.
Luk 9:21 however, Jesus strictly charged them not to say so much to any body; adding,
Luk 9:22 the son of man must suffer many indignities: be rejected by the rulers, the chief priests, and Scribes: be put to death: and the third day be raised again.
Luk 9:23 Then he said to the whole company, if any one will be my follower, let him renounce himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.
Luk 9:24 for whoever would save his life, shall lose it: and he that would lose his life, out of love to me, shall save it.
Luk 9:25 what advantage is it for a man to have gain'd the whole world, if he himself runs into utter loss and ruin?
Luk 9:26 for whoever shall be ashamed of me, and of my doctrine, of him shall the son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in the glory of his father, and of the holy angels.
Luk 9:27 I declare unto you, there are some here present, who shall not die, till they see the Messiah reign.
Luk 9:28 About eight days after this discourse, he took with him Peter, John, and James, and went up a mountain to pray.
Luk 9:29 as he was praying, the appearance of his countenance was quite chang'd, and his raiment was of a splendid white:
Luk 9:30 two persons of a glorious form were seen talking with him; they were Moses, and Elias,
Luk 9:31 who discours'd about the exit, he was to make at Jerusalem;
Luk 9:32 while Peter, and the others with him, were overwhelm'd with sleep: but when they wak'd, they observed his glory, and the two persons present with him,
Luk 9:33 who were just departing from him, when Peter said to Jesus, master, it is best for us to stay here: let us build three apartments, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing well what he said.
Luk 9:34 while he was speaking, there came a cloud and over-shadowed them, who were seized with fear, at their vanishing in the cloud,
Luk 9:35 from whence a voice issued out, saying, "this is my beloved son, obey him."
Luk 9:36 and before the sound was gone, Jesus was left alone: this they kept secret, and for some time did not acquaint any one in the least with what they had seen.
Luk 9:37 The next day, when they were come down from the mountain, a multitude of people happen'd to meet him:
Luk 9:38 when one of the company cry'd out, master, I beseech you, cast your eyes upon my son, for he is my only child:
Luk 9:39 he is frequently seized by a spirit, which makes him immediately roar, then throws him into convulsions with foaming, and never leaves him, but with difficulty and bruises.
Luk 9:40 I desired your disciples to cast out this spirit; but they were not able.
Luk 9:41 then said Jesus, O incredulous, and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? bring hither your son.
Luk 9:42 as the child was advancing, the demon threw him down, into convulsions: but Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, cured the child, and delivered him to his father.
Luk 9:43 and all the people were astonished at such an instance of divine power: and as they were admiring whatever Jesus did, he said to his disciples,
Luk 9:44 give attention to what I now say, namely, that the son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men.
Luk 9:45 but they did not comprehend that expression: it was as a riddle, which they could not understand, and they were afraid to desire him to explain the meaning of that expression.
Luk 9:46 At length they enter'd into a debate, which of them should be the greatest.
Luk 9:47 but Jesus perceiving what they thought, took a child and set him before him: then said to them,
Luk 9:48 whoever receives such a child in my name, receives me: and he that receives me, receives him that sent me. for he that is least among you all, he shall be greatest.
Luk 9:49 Then said John to Jesus, master, we saw one casting out demons in your name, and we oppos'd it, because he does not follow you with us.
Luk 9:50 but Jesus said to him, don't oppose it: for he that is not against us, is for us.
Luk 9:51 Now the time of his assumption drawing nigh, he was fix'd in his resolution to go to Jerusalem:
Luk 9:52 and he sent messengers before, who went to a town of the Samaritans, to prepare a lodging for him.
Luk 9:53 but they would not entertain him, because he appear'd to them, as if he was going to Jerusalem.
Luk 9:54 his disciples James and John observing this, said, Lord, shall we command fire to descend from heaven, as Elias did, in order to consume them?
Luk 9:55 but Jesus turn'd, and rebuked them, saying, you don't know by what spirit you are moved.
Luk 9:56 for the son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. and they went to another village.
Luk 9:57 At another time, as they were walking in the road, a man said to him, I will be your follower, wherever you go.
Luk 9:58 Jesus answered him, foxes have their kennels, and birds of the air their nests, but the son of man hath not where to lay his head.
Luk 9:59 Then he said to another, follow me: but he replied, Lord, let me stay first, till I bury my father.
Luk 9:60 Jesus said to him, let the dead bury their dead; but do you go and preach the kingdom of God.
Luk 9:61 another likewise said, I will be your follower; but let me first go home, and settle the affairs of my family.
Luk 9:62 Jesus answered him, whoever puts his hand to the plough, and looks back, is not fit to be employ'd in the kingdom of God.

Luk 10:1 After this the Lord nominated seventy disciples more, and sent them before by two and two, into all the cities, and towns, where he himself design'd to go.
Luk 10:2 and he said to them, the harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few: intreat therefore the Lord of the harvest to send forth labourers into his harvest.
Luk 10:3 go then: I send you as lambs among wolves.
Luk 10:4 carry neither purse, nor bag, nor shoes; neither salute any man by the way.
Luk 10:5 at your entrance into any house, first say, prosperity be to this family.
Luk 10:6 if any be there, who deserve your benediction, it shall have its effect upon them; otherwise, it shall redound to your own advantage.
Luk 10:7 continue in the same house, and eat and drink whatever it affords: for a labourer deserves his wages: therefore don't shift from family to family.
Luk 10:8 when you come to any city, where they receive you, eat without scruple, whatever food is set before you,
Luk 10:9 and heal the sick you find there. tell the inhabitants the kingdom of God is drawing nigh unto them.
Luk 10:10 but when you enter into any city, and they refuse to entertain you, go through the streets,
Luk 10:11 and cry, "we shake off the dust, that sticks to our feet, against you: but take notice, the kingdom of God has been near you."
Luk 10:12 I declare unto you, that the people of Sodom shall be treated with less severity in the day of judgment, than that city.
Luk 10:13 wo unto thee Chorazin; wo unto thee Bethsaida: for if the miracles, which have been wrought among you, had been wrought in Tyre and Sidon, they would long since have lain repenting in sackcloth and ashes.
Luk 10:14 therefore Tyre and Sidon shall be treated with less severity in the day of judgment, than you.
Luk 10:15 and thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to the sky, shall be plung'd into an abyss.
Luk 10:16 he that adheres to you, adheres to me; he that rejects you, rejects me: and he that rejects me, rejecteth him that sent me.
Luk 10:17 At length the seventy return'd with great joy, saying, Lord, even the demons have been made subject to us by virtue of your name.
Luk 10:18 upon which he said to them, I beheld satan falling, like lightning, from heaven.
Luk 10:19 I have authoriz'd you to trample upon serpents and scorpions, and triumph over all the power of the enemy; so that nothing shall be capable of doing you any mischief.
Luk 10:20 however, let not this be the matter of your rejoicing, that the spirits are subject to you: but rejoice, that you have a title to the joys of heaven.
Luk 10:21 At that very time Jesus fell into a divine transport, and said, "I magnify thee, O father, the Lord of heaven and earth, for having conceal'd these things from the artful and the crafty, whilst thou hast reveal'd them to the unskilful. justly, O father, hast thou thus dispens'd thy favour."
Luk 10:22 the management of every thing is committed to me by my father: no one knows what character the son is invested with, except the father; nor who the father is, except the son, and he to whom the son shall please to reveal it.
Luk 10:23 then addressing himself to his disciples in particular, he said, happy are they, who see what you see:
Luk 10:24 for I assure you, that many prophets and princes have desired to see what you now behold, but they never saw it; and to hear what you have heard, which they never did.
Luk 10:25 Then a doctor of the law stood up to try him, saying, master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
Luk 10:26 to whom he answered, how does the law run in that case? what do you find?
Luk 10:27 he replied, 'tis thus, "thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, with all thy strength, and with all thy understanding; and thy neighbour as thy self."
Luk 10:28 you have answered well, replied Jesus, do this, and you shall live.
Luk 10:29 but he being desirous to clear himself, said to Jesus, but what is meant by our neighbour?
Luk 10:30 to which Jesus answered, a certain man, as he was going from Jerusalem to Jericho, fell among thieves, who stripp'd him, and beat him, then march'd off leaving him half dead.
Luk 10:31 a certain priest happen'd to be travelling that way, who look'd upon him, and then pass'd on.
Luk 10:32 a Levite too came to the same place, gave him a look, and pass'd on.
Luk 10:33 but a certain Samaritan being on the road, came where he was, and when he saw him, he took compassion on him,
Luk 10:34 went up to him, dress'd his wounds by applying oil and wine, then set him upon his own mule, and brought him to an inn, where he took care of him.
Luk 10:35 upon his departure the next day, he took out two denarii, and gave them to the master of the house, take care of him, said he, and I will repay you all the charges you are at, upon my return.
Luk 10:36 which now of the three do you think was neighbour to the man that was robb'd.
Luk 10:37 he, reply'd the doctor, who took pity on him. then said Jesus to him, go then, and imitate his example.
Luk 10:38 Another time, as they were on a journey, Jesus enter'd into a village, where a woman, named Martha, entertain'd him at her house.
Luk 10:39 now she had a sister, named Mary, who placed herself at the feet of Jesus, to attend to his discourse.
Luk 10:40 but Martha perplex'd with the hurry of her affairs, came to him, and said, Lord, don't you observe my sister has left me to serve all alone: direct her therefore to give me some assistance.
Luk 10:41 but Jesus replied to her, Martha, Martha, you trouble yourself about a world of cares:
Luk 10:42 but the best and the most necessary concern is, what Mary has pitch'd upon, of which she shall never be deprived.

Luk 11:1 One day Jesus had been praying in a certain place, and as soon as he had done, one of his disciples said to him, instruct us about prayer, as John the baptist instructed his disciples.
Luk 11:2 he said therefore to them, when ye pray, say, "our father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. thy kingdom come. thy will be done, on earth, as in heaven.
Luk 11:3 give us every day our portion of bread.
Luk 11:4 and forgive us our sins: since we forgive every one that has offended us. and leave us not under temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."
Luk 11:5 Then he said to them, suppose any of you should go to his friend at midnight; and say to him, friend, lend me three loaves:
Luk 11:6 for a friend of mine, a traveller, is come to my house, and I have nothing to entertain him with.
Luk 11:7 and he within should give this answer, don't trouble me now: the door is made fast, and my family are all in bed: I can't get up to supply you.
Luk 11:8 I tell you, tho' he will not rise, to supply him, out of friendship: yet out of regard to his importunity, he will rise, and lend him whatever he has occasion for.
Luk 11:9 I tell you likewise, ask, and it shall be given: seek, and ye shall find: knock, and the door shall be opened.
Luk 11:10 for every one that asketh, receives: he that seeketh, finds: and he that knocks has admittance.
Luk 11:11 what father among you would give his son a stone, when he asketh for bread? or if for a fish, instead of a fish would he give him a serpent?
Luk 11:12 or instead of an egg will he offer him a scorpion?
Luk 11:13 if ye then, wicked as ye are, know how to give what is proper to your children: how much more shall your heavenly father give the holy spirit to them that ask him?
Luk 11:14 At another time Jesus was casting out a demon, that was dumb: and as soon as the demon was gone out, the dumb man spoke: and the people wondred.
Luk 11:15 but some of them said, he casteth out demons by Beelzebub the prince of the demons.
Luk 11:16 others, to try him, desir'd he would show some miraculous sign in the heaven.
Luk 11:17 but Jesus perceiving their suspicions, said to them, every kingdom divided against itself will soon be desolate: one family divided against another, falls to ruin.
Luk 11:18 so if satan be divided against himself, how can his kingdom subsist?
Luk 11:19 for you assert, that I cast out demons by Beelzebub. but if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? wherefore they shall be your judges.
Luk 11:20 but if I cast out demons by the finger of God, it follows, that the reign of the Messiah is now begun among you.
Luk 11:21 when a man that is stout and well arm'd guards his palace, his possessions are safe.
Luk 11:22 but if a stronger than he should assault, and overcome him, he will strip him of all his furniture on which he relyed, and divide the plunder.
Luk 11:23 He that does not join with me, is against me: and he that is not active for me, is a deserter.
Luk 11:24 When the impure spirit is gone out of a man, he wanders about the wilds in quest of some repose: but finding none, I will return, says he, to the abode I have quitted.
Luk 11:25 and at his return he findeth it swept and garnished.
Luk 11:26 then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself: they all enter in and dwell there, and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.
Luk 11:27 As he was discoursing thus, a certain woman in the middle of the crowd lift up her voice, and said to him, happy the mother, who bare thee: happy the nurse, who gave thee milk.
Luk 11:28 but rather, said he, happy are they who hear the word of God, and put it in practice.
Luk 11:29 and as the crowd grew more numerous, he thus began, this is a degenerate race of men: they demand a miracle: but no miracle shall be exhibited, but such as happen'd in the person of Jonas the prophet.
Luk 11:30 for as the case of Jonas was a miraculous instance to the Ninevites, so shall the son of man be to this generation.
Luk 11:31 the queen of the south shall rise up in the day of judgment against this generation, and condemn it: for she came from the remote parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; but now, a greater than Solomon is here.
Luk 11:32 the people of Nineve shall rise up in the day of Judgment, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; but now, a greater than Jonas is here.
Luk 11:33 However, when a man has once lighted his lamp, he does not hide it in a by-place, or under a bushel; but sets it on a stand, that all who come in may have light.
Luk 11:34 the eye is the light of the body: if therefore your eye be clear, every member of your body will have the benefit of the light: but if it be spoil'd, they must all rest in darkness.
Luk 11:35 take care therefore, that the light which is in thee do not become darkness.
Luk 11:36 for if thy whole body be enlightned, and no part dark, your whole conduct will be regulated, just as the light of a lamp directs all your motions.
Luk 11:37 While he was speaking, a Pharisee invited him to dine his house, where he went, and sat down at table.
Luk 11:38 but the Pharisee was surprized to see that he did not wash before dinner.
Luk 11:39 upon which the Lord said to him, you Pharisees won't leave any filth upon the outside of a cup or a platter: while your consciences are abandon'd to rapine, and sensuality.
Luk 11:40 do you stupidly imagine that he, who made the outward man, did not make the inward too?
Luk 11:41 be but charitable to the utmost of your ability, and every thing will be pure to you.
Luk 11:42 but wo unto you Pharisees: for you will pay the tythes of mint, and rue, and all sorts of herbs, but as for justice and true piety, those you neglect. these you ought to have practised, without omitting however the other.
Luk 11:43 wo unto you Pharisees, for you affect to have the first rank in the synagogue, and to be complimented in publick places.
Luk 11:44 wo unto you: for you resemble subterraneous monuments, which men walk over, without perceiving them.
Luk 11:45 Then a doctor of the law objected to him, saying, master, your discourse is an insult upon us also.
Luk 11:46 but Jesus said, wo unto you likewise, doctors of the law; for you load men with insupportable burthens, the least part of which you will not yourselves bear:
Luk 11:47 wo unto you, for you rebuild the sepulchres of those prophets, whom your fathers put to death:
Luk 11:48 they were guilty of slaughter, and you raise monuments to their memory.
Luk 11:49 agreeably to this, in the Wisdom of God 'tis said, "I will send them prophets and apostles: some they will kill, and others they will persecute:
Luk 11:50 " so that the blood of all the prophets, which has been shed since the creation of the world, may be required of this generation,
Luk 11:51 from the blood of Abel to that of Zacharias, who perished between the altar and the temple: yes, I assure you, this generation shall be responsible for it all.
Luk 11:52 wo unto you, doctors of the law; for after having taken the key of knowledge, you remain still in the dark, and hinder others, who desire to have light.
Luk 11:53 As he was pursuing his discourse, the Scribes and Pharisees passionately urg'd him with many captious questions, in order to ensnare him,
Luk 11:54 and draw something from his own mouth, that might be brought as evidence against him.

Luk 12:1 In the mean time thousands of people being gather'd about him, so as to trample upon one another, he first address'd himself thus to his disciples, beware of the corrupt doctrine of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Luk 12:2 for there is nothing conceal'd, which shall not be disclos'd; nothing secret, which shall not be made publick.
Luk 12:3 whatever you have utter'd in the dark, shall be brought to light: and what you have whisper'd in a closet, shall be proclaim'd upon the house top.
Luk 12:4 As for you, my friends, be not afraid of those, who can kill the body, and after that can effect nothing more.
Luk 12:5 but I will inform you whom you should fear: fear him, who after he has kill'd, has power to precipitate into hell; yes, I advise you, fear him.
Luk 12:6 are not five sparrows sold for two pence? however the divine providence extends to each of them.
Luk 12:7 nay, the very hairs of your head can't fall without being number'd: be not then afraid; there is no comparison between you and sparrows.
Luk 12:8 moreover I declare unto you, whoever shall acknowledge me before men, him shall the son of man also own before the angels of God.
Luk 12:9 but whoever shall renounce me before men, he shall be renounc'd before the angels of God.
Luk 12:10 and whoever shall cast a reflection upon the son of man, it shall be forgiven him; but as for him, that shall blaspheme the holy spirit, it shall not be forgiven.
Luk 12:11 when you are brought into the synagogues, and before magistrates and rulers, be not sollicitous what to say in your own defence;
Luk 12:12 for the holy spirit shall instruct you on the very occasion, what is proper to be said.
Luk 12:13 Then one of the company said to him, order my brother to give me my share of our inheritance.
Luk 12:14 but Jesus answer'd him, who made me a judge, or an arbitrator between you?
Luk 12:15 then he said to them, take care to be clear of all avarice: for the enjoyment of life does not depend upon the having large possessions.
Luk 12:16 to which purpose he propos'd to them this parable: a rich man had some land that was very fruitful.
Luk 12:17 and thus he reason'd with himself, what shall I do for want of room to store up my crop?
Luk 12:18 this will I do, said he, I will pull down my barns, and build greater: and there I will bestow all my rich product.
Luk 12:19 then I will say to my soul, soul, you have many enjoyments in reserve for a number of years; take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
Luk 12:20 but God said to him, thou fool, this night shall thy soul be required of thee: who then shall enjoy what thou hast provided?
Luk 12:21 such is he, who heaps up his treasure here, and makes no provision for another world.
Luk 12:22 Wherefore (said he to his disciples,) be not sollicitous for your life, what ye shall eat; nor for the body, what ye shall put on.
Luk 12:23 the life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.
Luk 12:24 consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap: nor have cellar or barn: are not you of much greater value than the fowls?
Luk 12:25 but which of you, with all his disquietude, can add one moment to the period of his life?
Luk 12:26 if then you can't effect so small a matter, why are you disquieted about a much longer time?
Luk 12:27 consider the lillys how they grow: they neither toil nor spin: and yet, I tell you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Luk 12:28 now if God thus cloaths the flowers, which exist to-day in the field, and to-morrow are thrown into the oven: how much more will he cloath you, O distrustful men?
Luk 12:29 therefore don't be concern'd about what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; but lay aside all your anxiety:
Luk 12:30 for it is enough that the Gentiles are so concern'd about these things: as for you, your father is acquainted with all your wants.
Luk 12:31 therefore do you rather seek the kingdom of God, and then all your necessities will be fully supply'd.
Luk 12:32 fear not, ye little flock, for it is your father's good pleasure to grant you the kingdom.
Luk 12:33 sell your possessions and give alms. lay up for yourselves a stock not subject to decay, a treasure in the heavens that will never fail, where no thief can approach, nor moth can spoil.
Luk 12:34 for where your treasure is, there likewise will your affections be.
Luk 12:35 Let your loins be girt, and your lamps burning:
Luk 12:36 imitate those servants who stand waiting for their master's return from the wedding, to let him in as soon as he comes to the door.
Luk 12:37 happy those servants, whom the master at his arrival shall find thus watching: I assure you, he shall gird himself, and make them sit at table, and will come to serve them.
Luk 12:38 happy are the servants he finds in such a state, whether it be at the second or at the third watch of the night, when he comes.
Luk 12:39 if the master of a house knew at what hour the thief would come, no doubt he would be on his guard, and not suffer him to break into his house.
Luk 12:40 be ye therefore likewise prepar'd; for the son of man will come, when you least expect him.
Luk 12:41 then Peter said to him, Lord, do you apply this similitude to us, or to all in general?
Luk 12:42 Jesus answered, if there be a faithful prudent steward, appointed by his master to give his domesticks their stated allowance; happy is such a servant,
Luk 12:43 whom his master at his return shall find so employ'd.
Luk 12:44 I assure you, he will intrust him with the management of his whole estate.
Luk 12:45 but if the servant should say within himself, my master delays his return; and fall a beating his fellow-servants, indulging himself in eating and drinking to excess.
Luk 12:46 his master will return on a day he does not expect him, and a an hour he is ignorant of; he will separate him from the rest, and give him a treatment answerable to his infidelity.
Luk 12:47 but the servant, who knows his master's will, and prepares not himself, nor executes his orders, shall receive many stripes.
Luk 12:48 whereas he that does not know it, and does things worthy of chastisement, shall receive fewer stripes. for to whom much is given, of him shall much be required, and the more a man has been trusted, the greater will be the demand.
Luk 12:49 I am come to purify the earth with fire, and how do I wish it were already kindled?
Luk 12:50 the baptism, which I am to undergo, how do I long till it be accomplished?
Luk 12:51 do you imagine that my coming will produce peace on the earth? I tell you, no; but rather division.
Luk 12:52 for the future, if there are five persons in one family, they will be divided; three against two, and two against three.
Luk 12:53 the father will be at variance with his son, and the son with the father: the mother with the daughter, and the daughter with the mother: the mother-in-law with the daughter-in-law, and the daughter-in-law with the mother-in-law.
Luk 12:54 Then he said to the people, when you see a cloud rise out of the west, you say, it is just going to rain; and so it happens.
Luk 12:55 and when the south wind blows, you say, there will be heat; and so it happens.
Luk 12:56 Hypocrites, you can judge of the phoenomena of the earth, and of the sky, but why can't you discern the present times?
Luk 12:57 why can't you judge what is proper to be done in your own affairs.
Luk 12:58 When you are going with your adversary before the magistrate, pay the interest, and get your discharge, while you are on the way; for fear he should bring you before the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into jail.
Luk 12:59 I tell you, you will not get out, till you have paid to the last farthing.

Luk 13:1 At the same time, there were some present, who gave Jesus an account of the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
Luk 13:2 upon which Jesus thus address'd himself to them. do you imagine that those Galileans were greater sinners than the rest of the nation, because they suffer'd in such a manner?
Luk 13:3 I tell you, no: and except you repent, you shall all likewise perish.
Luk 13:4 or those eighteen, upon whom the tower of Siloam fell, and slew them, do you think they were greater criminals than the other inhabitants of Jerusalem?
Luk 13:5 I tell you, no: and except you repent, you shall all likewise perish.
Luk 13:6 He proposed likewise this parable: a certain man had a fig-tree planted in his vineyard, and he came expecting it should have had fruit, but he found none.
Luk 13:7 then he said to the vine-dresser, you see, I have been looking these three years for fruit from this fig-tree, but find none: hew it down, why should it cumber my ground?
Luk 13:8 to which he made answer, sir, let it alone one year longer, till I shall dig about it, and dung it.
Luk 13:9 perhaps it may bear fruit: if not, you may after that hew it down.
Luk 13:10 As he was teaching in a synagogue on the sabbath-day, a woman was present,
Luk 13:11 who had been kept infirm by a spirit eighteen years: and stooped in such a manner, she was not able to hold up her head strait.
Luk 13:12 Jesus seeing her, called her to him, and said, woman you are freed from your disorder.
Luk 13:13 then he laid his hands upon her: and instantly she stood upright, and glorified God.
Luk 13:14 but the ruler of the synagogue being highly incensed at Jesus's healing on the sabbath-day, said to the people, there are six days for work, you should come therefore for cure on those days, and not on the sabbath.
Luk 13:15 to which Jesus replied, thou hypocrite, who is there among you that scruples to untie his ox or his ass, and lead him from the stall to water on the sabbath-day?
Luk 13:16 and must not this daughter of Abraham, whom satan has held bound these eighteen years, be disengag'd from this bond, on a sabbath-day?
Luk 13:17 at which all his adversaries were confounded. but the people were highly pleased, at the glorious actions which he perform'd.
Luk 13:18 Then he said, what does the kingdom of God resemble? to what shall I compare it?
Luk 13:19 it is like a grain of mustard-seed, which a man took, and sowed in his garden: it grew, and became so large, that the birds of the air built their nests in its boughs.
Luk 13:20 again he said, to what shall I compare the kingdom of God?
Luk 13:21 it is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leaven'd.
Luk 13:22 Afterwards he pass'd thro' several citys and villages, where he taught the people, on his journey to Jerusalem.
Luk 13:23 and somebody ask'd him, Lord, will there be but few people saved? to which he answered,
Luk 13:24 strive to enter in at the narrow gate: for I declare unto you, that many shall try to get in, and shall not be able.
Luk 13:25 when once the master of the family is enter'd in, and has fastned the door, you will stand without beating at the door, and cry, Lord, Lord, let us in: but he will answer, you are strangers to me.
Luk 13:26 then you will say, we have eat, and drank with you, and you have taught in our streets.
Luk 13:27 but he will answer, I tell you, you are strangers to me: depart from me, ye workers of iniquity.
Luk 13:28 there will be weeping, and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.
Luk 13:29 yet some shall come from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south, and shall be entertain'd in the kingdom of God.
Luk 13:30 then you will see those, who were last, become first: and those who were first, become last.
Luk 13:31 At the same time, some of the Pharisees came to him, and said, get away, retire from hence, for Herod designs to take away your life.
Luk 13:32 but he answered them, go, tell that fox, that to-day and to-morrow I am casting out demons, and performing cures, and the third day my course will be finished:
Luk 13:33 till then I must be stirring about, to-day, and to-morrow, and the next day: for a prophet cannot be put to death any where, but at Jerusalem.
Luk 13:34 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killest the prophets, and stonest those, who are sent unto thee: how often would I have gather'd thy children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and ye would not?"
Luk 13:35 you will soon find your aboad become desolate. I declare unto you, you shall not see me till the time, when you will say, "blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord."

Luk 14:1 One sabbath-day, Jesus went to dine with a Pharisee of the first distinction, where he was strictly observ'd.
Luk 14:2 now there happen'd to be a man just by him, who had a dropsy.
Luk 14:3 Jesus therefore addressing himself to the doctors of the law, and to the Pharisees, said, is it allowable to perform a cure on the sabbath-day? to which they made no answer.
Luk 14:4 but he laid his hand upon the man, cured him, and dismissed him.
Luk 14:5 Then continuing his discourse, which of you, said he, if his child or his ox fell into a pit, would not immediately draw him out, though it were on the sabbath-day?
Luk 14:6 and they could not tell what to reply to it.
Luk 14:7 Afterwards observing how eager the guests were for the first places, he gave them this instruction:
Luk 14:8 when any one invites you to a wedding, don't put yourself in the highest seat: for fear some person of greater distinction should be a guest,
Luk 14:9 and he that invited you both, should come and bid you give place to him; and you should have the disgrace of taking the lowest seat.
Luk 14:10 but when you are invited, go place your self last; that he, who invited you, when he comes, may say to you, friend, go up higher: and that will do you honour before all the company at table.
Luk 14:11 for he that exalteth himself, shall be humbled, and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted.
Luk 14:12 Then he said to the Pharisee, that had invited him, when you give a dinner, or a supper, don't call your friends, or your brethren, or kinsmen, or wealthy neighbours; lest they invite you again, and make you a requital.
Luk 14:13 but when you make a feast call the poor, and maimed, the lame and blind:
Luk 14:14 and you shall be happy in not receiving a requital: for you shall be recompenc'd at the resurrection of the just.
Luk 14:15 One of the company hearing that, said to him, happy is he that shall be entertain'd in the kingdom of God.
Luk 14:16 upon which Jesus said, a certain man made a great entertainment; where many were invited.
Luk 14:17 at supper-time he sent his servant to tell the guests to come, because every thing was ready.
Luk 14:18 but they were all of a mind in making some excuse: the first said to him, I have bought a piece of ground, which I must needs go and see: therefore pray excuse me.
Luk 14:19 another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, which I am going to prove: I beg you to excuse me.
Luk 14:20 another said, I have married a wife: 'tis therefore impossible for me to come.
Luk 14:21 so the servant return'd, and related the whole matter to his master, who in resentment said to his servant, go immediately into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring hither the poor, the maimed, the halt, and the blind.
Luk 14:22 at length the servant said, sir, your orders have been executed, and still there is room.
Luk 14:23 the master reply'd, go then to the high-ways and by-paths, and compel them to come in, that my house may be full.
Luk 14:24 for I tell you that not one of those, who were invited, shall taste of my supper.
Luk 14:25 After this a great multitude being gather'd about him, he address'd himself to them,
Luk 14:26 and said, he that can't abandon his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, nay, even his own life, cannot be my disciple.
Luk 14:27 and he that does not bear his cross, and tread in my steps, cannot be my disciple.
Luk 14:28 for who of you would resolve to build a tower, without taking the trouble first of all to compute the expence, and whether he is able to finish it?
Luk 14:29 for fear he should be made the jest of every spectator, for laying the foundation, without being able to carry it on.
Luk 14:30 this man, will they say, began to build, but wanted stock to finish.
Luk 14:31 or where is the king, that will march to give battle to another king, without setting himself first to deliberate, whether he is strong enough with ten thousand to withstand an army of twenty thousand?
Luk 14:32 that in case he is not, he may send an embassy, and desire conditions of peace, before the other approaches.
Luk 14:33 in like manner every one of you must count upon renouncing all that he has, otherwise he cannot be my disciple.
Luk 14:34 salt is good, but if the salt has lost its savour, with what shall it be recovered?
Luk 14:35 it would be fit neither for the land, nor for the dunghil, but only to be thrown away. he that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Luk 15:1 Then many of the Publicans, and people of a bad reputation gather'd about Jesus to hear him;
Luk 15:2 at which the Pharisees and Scribes murmured, saying, this man gives access to men of bad character, and eats with them.
Luk 15:3 but he propos'd to them this parable.
Luk 15:4 who of you that has an hundred sheep, will not, upon losing one, leave the ninety nine in the desart, to go after that which is lost, till he finds it?
Luk 15:5 and when he hath found it, joyfully lay it upon his shoulders?
Luk 15:6 and when he comes home, call his friends and neighbours together, and say to them, rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep, that was lost?
Luk 15:7 I tell you, that there shall likewise be greater joy in heaven for one sinner that repents, than for ninety nine just persons, that need no repentance.
Luk 15:8 or if a woman, that has ten pieces of money, should lose one of them, will she not light a lamp, sweep the house, and carefully search, till she find it?
Luk 15:9 and when 'tis found, will she not call her friends aud neighbours together, and say, rejoice with me, for I have found the piece, I had lost?
Luk 15:10 even so, I assure you, the angels in heaven rejoice, when any one sinner becomes a penitent.
Luk 15:11 Again he said: a certain man had two sons;
Luk 15:12 the younger of which said to his father, father, give me that portion of the estate which falls to my share. accordingly he divided his estate among them.
Luk 15:13 a little while after the younger son turn'd all he had into money, and travell'd into a foreign country, where he squander'd away his fortune in luxurious living.
Luk 15:14 when he had spent all, there happen'd to be a severe famine in that country;
Luk 15:15 and he was reduced to want, which forc'd him to make his application to one of the inhabitants there, who sent him to his farm to look after his swine.
Luk 15:16 for he would have been contented to have liv'd upon the carruways, with which they usually fed the swine: but nobody would supply him.
Luk 15:17 at length coming to himself, how many, said he, does my father keep in pay, who have bread in abundance, whilst I am dying here with hunger?
Luk 15:18 I will depart, and go to my father, and say to him, father, I have sinned against heaven, and against thee;
Luk 15:19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son: treat me as one of your hir'd servants.
Luk 15:20 so he departed and went to his father. but while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him, and mov'd with compassion, ran and threw himself upon his neck, and kissed him.
Luk 15:21 then the son said to him, father, I have sinned against heaven, and against you, I am no longer worthy to be called your son.
Luk 15:22 but the father said to his servants, bring hither the finest robe, and put it on him: put a ring on his finger, and shoes on his feet.
Luk 15:23 take the fatted calf, and kill it: let us eat and be merry:
Luk 15:24 for this son of mine was dead, and is come to life: he was lost, and is found again. and then they began their feast.
Luk 15:25 In the mean time his elder son was in the country. at his return, when he came near home, he heard the musick and dancing:
Luk 15:26 and calling one of the servants, he ask'd what was the occasion of it,
Luk 15:27 who reply'd, your brother is return'd, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him in good health.
Luk 15:28 upon this he was full of resentment, and refused to go in: and when his father came out to persuade him, he replied to his father,
Luk 15:29 how many years have I serv'd you, without having ever disobey'd your orders? and yet you never bestow'd a kid upon me, to make merry with my friends:
Luk 15:30 whereas this son of yours, who has eat up his fortune among a pack of loose creatures, is no sooner come but you must kill the fatted calf for him.
Luk 15:31 son, said he to him, you shall continue to be with me, and all that I have shall be thine.
Luk 15:32 but it was necessary to feast and rejoice, because your brother here was dead, and is again alive: he was lost and is now found.

Luk 16:1 Jesus said likewise to his disciples, a certain rich man had an information against his steward, for making havock of his estate.
Luk 16:2 upon making him appear, he said to him, what information is this, I hear against thee? give an account of your administration, for you must not be my steward any longer.
Luk 16:3 upon which the steward said in himself, what shall I do, now my master strips me of my employment? dig I cannot: and 'tis shameful to beg: I see it now,
Luk 16:4 I must do something that will secure me a reception in other families, when I have lost my place in this.
Luk 16:5 so he sent for every one of his master's debtors in private, he ask'd the first, how much do you owe my master?
Luk 16:6 a hundred measures of oil, said he. take your bill, said the steward, sit down there, and write out one immediately for fifty.
Luk 16:7 then he said to another, how much do you owe? a hundred measures of wheat, said he. take your bill, says the steward, and write out one for fourscore.
Luk 16:8 and this unfaithful steward was commended by his master for being so provident. for they who look to this world, manage their affairs with more prudence, than those who have a prospect of a better.
Luk 16:9 I advise you in like manner to lay out your fallacious treasure in acts of charity, that when you die, they may secure to you everlasting habitations.
Luk 16:10 He that is faithful in a small trust, will be faithful in a greater: and he that is unfaithful in a little, will be unfaithful in much.
Luk 16:11 if therefore your fidelity has not appear'd in the use of these transitory enjoyments, how can you be trusted with what is more lasting?
Luk 16:12 if you have imbezel'd what another gave you in trust, how can he give you an estate in perpetuity?
Luk 16:13 a servant cannot serve two masters: for either he will neglect the one, and attend the other; or he will be attached to the first, and misbehave to the last. you cannot serve God and mammon.
Luk 16:14 The Pharisees too, who were noted for avarice, heard all this discourse, and treated him with derision.
Luk 16:15 but he said to them, you pretend to piety before men, which, however they may admire, is an abomination to God, who knows your real temper.
Luk 16:16 the law and the prophets were the only rule till John's time: since when, the kingdom of God has been proclaim'd, and all sorts of people strive to be members.
Luk 16:17 yet heaven and earth may sooner pass away, than any part of the law be unaccomplish'd.
Luk 16:18 whoever repudiates his wife, and marries another, is an adulterer. and he that marries her, that is repudiated by her husband, is an adulterer.
Luk 16:19 There was a rich man, who used to dress in purple and fine linnen, and pass his days in pomp and luxury.
Luk 16:20 a certain beggar named Lazarus, was lying at his gate, and tho' cover'd with ulcers, the very dogs came and fawned upon him.
Luk 16:21 but he wanted to be fed with the crumbs, that fell from the rich man's table.
Luk 16:22 at length the beggar died: and was conveyed by the angels to Abraham's bower. the rich man died too, and was buried.
Luk 16:23 and being in the infernal regions of torments, he lift up his eyes, and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bower.
Luk 16:24 and he cry'd out, saying, father Abraham, take pity on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water to cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
Luk 16:25 but Abraham said, son, remember you had your enjoyments, when you were alive, and Lazarus his misfortunes: but now he has his consolation, and you your torments.
Luk 16:26 besides this, there is an unalterable chasm between us and you, so that the passage from one place to the other is impracticable to those who should attempt it.
Luk 16:27 upon which he said, father, I beg it of you, that you would send him to my father's family, where I have five brothers,
Luk 16:28 to give them warning, lest they also come into this place of torment.
Luk 16:29 but Abraham replied, they have Moses and the prophets, let them mind them.
Luk 16:30 no, father Abraham, said he, they will not: but if any of the dead went to them, they will certainly repent.
Luk 16:31 Abraham replied, if they disregard Moses and the prophets, they will not believe any one, though he rose from the dead.

Luk 17:1 Then said Jesus to his disciples, it is impossible but that discouragements should come: but wo to him, who is the occasion of them.
Luk 17:2 it were better for him that a milstone were hang'd about his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should occasion any innocent person to relapse.
Luk 17:3 take care of your conduct. if your brother offend you, rebuke him, and if he repent, forgive him.
Luk 17:4 tho' he should offend you seven times in a day, and seven times in the day return to you, saying, I repent, you must forgive him.
Luk 17:5 The Apostles having said to the Lord, increase our faith, he answer'd them,
Luk 17:6 if your faith improv'd like a grain of mustard-seed, you might say to this sycamine-tree, be thou rooted up, and planted in the sea; and it should obey you.
Luk 17:7 Who of you having a servant, that plows, or feeds your cattle, will immediately upon his coming from field, say to him, come and sit at table?
Luk 17:8 won't he rather say, get ready my supper, dress yourself, and wait upon me, till I have done eating and drinking; after that, take your meal?
Luk 17:9 will he think himself oblig'd to that servant for doing what he was order'd? I believe not.
Luk 17:10 so when you have done all that you were commanded to do, say, we are unprofitable servants; we have only done what was our duty to do.
Luk 17:11 As Jesus was going to Jerusalem, he happen'd to pass between Samaria and Galilee.
Luk 17:12 and as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten lepers, who stood at a distance, and cry'd out aloud, Jesus our master,
Luk 17:13 take pity on us.
Luk 17:14 as soon as he perceiv'd them, he said to them, go shew yourselves to the priests. and on the way they found themselves cured.
Luk 17:15 one of them perceiving he was healed, turn'd back, praising God aloud.
Luk 17:16 then prostrating himself at the feet of Jesus, he gave him thanks. now this man was a Samaritan.
Luk 17:17 and Jesus said to him, were not all the ten healed? where then are the other nine?
Luk 17:18 is no body return'd to glorify God, but this alien only?
Luk 17:19 and he said to him, rise, go your way, your faith has sav'd you.
Luk 17:20 Upon the Pharisees asking him, when the kingdom of God should come, he answer'd them, the kingdom of God is not usher'd in with pomp and exclamations,
Luk 17:21 as see here! or see there! for even now the kingdom of God is commenc'd among you.
Luk 17:22 At length he said to his disciples, the time will come, when ye will wish to see the son of man appear, and shall not see him.
Luk 17:23 they will tell you, here he is, or, he is there: but don't go out to follow them;
Luk 17:24 for as the lightning flashes from one extremity of the sky to the other, so shall the appearance of the son of man be.
Luk 17:25 but before this, he must undergo many sufferings, and be rejected by this generation:
Luk 17:26 the same thing shall happen in the son of man's time as did in Noah's days.
Luk 17:27 eating and drinking, marriages and matches was the business till the very day that Noah entred into the ark, when the flood came and overwhelm'd them all.
Luk 17:28 and as it was in the days of Lot, they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building:
Luk 17:29 but the very day that Lot went out of Sodom, a storm of lightning and thunder fell from heaven and destroy'd them all.
Luk 17:30 even thus shall it be in the day when the son of man shall appear.
Luk 17:31 then let not him that is on the house-top venture down to secure his furniture: and he that is in the field, let him not return back.
Luk 17:32 remember Lot's wife.
Luk 17:33 he that seeks to save his life, will expose it; and he that exposes his life, will preserve it.
Luk 17:34 I tell you, that of two persons lying in the same bed that night, the one shall be taken, and the other left.
Luk 17:35 two women shall be grinding together, the one shall be taken, and the other left:
Luk 17:36 two men shall be in the field, the one shall be taken, and the other left.
Luk 17:37 then they ask'd him, where, Lord, will this happen? he reply'd, wherever the carcase is, there will the eagles hover together.

Luk 18:1 Jesus propos'd likewise this parable to them, to show that they should persevere in prayer, and not be discouraged.
Luk 18:2 saying, in a certain city there was a judge, who neither feared God, nor regarded man.
Luk 18:3 a widow was likewise there, who frequently came to him, saying, do me justice against my adversary.
Luk 18:4 for some time he refus'd to do it: but at length he said in himself; tho' I neither fear God, nor regard man;
Luk 18:5 yet, because this widow importunes me, I will do her justice, that she may'nt be continually coming to teaze me.
Luk 18:6 observe, said Jesus, that language of this unrighteous judge.
Luk 18:7 and will not God avenge his own elect, who cry to him night and day? will he delay their cause?
Luk 18:8 I tell you, he will speedily avenge them. however, when the son of man comes, how few of the faithful will he find in the land?
Luk 18:9 Then he propos'd this parable, concerning those who had a great opinion of their own justice, and look'd with contempt upon others.
Luk 18:10 two men went to the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, the other a Publican.
Luk 18:11 the Pharisee in a standing posture pray'd thus by himself, O God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men, a robber, a cheat, an adulterer, or like that Publican.
Luk 18:12 I fast twice a week, and I pay the tythe of all I possess.
Luk 18:13 but the Publican, who stood a good way lower, not daring to lift up even his eyes to heaven, only smote his breast, and said, O God, be merciful to me, who am a sinner.
Luk 18:14 I tell you this man went home approv'd as just, and not the other. for whoever exalteth himself shall be humbled, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Luk 18:15 And as they were presenting children to him, for the imposition of hands, his disciples observing it, rebuk'd those that brought them.
Luk 18:16 but Jesus called the children to him, and said to his disciples, let the children come to me, without any hindrance, for they who belong to the kingdom of God, must be like them.
Luk 18:17 I declare unto you, he that does not come with the disposition of a child shall not enter into the kingdom of God.
Luk 18:18 Then a person of distinction ask'd him this question, good master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?
Luk 18:19 Jesus replied, why do you call me good? there is but one who is good, that is God.
Luk 18:20 you know the commandments, "do not commit adultery, do not kill, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honour thy father and mother."
Luk 18:21 all these, said he, have I observ'd from my youth.
Luk 18:22 upon hearing that, Jesus said to him, one thing you have yet to do: sell all you have, and give it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: then come, and follow me.
Luk 18:23 upon hearing this he was very sad: for he had a large estate.
Luk 18:24 Jesus perceiving him so very dejected, said, how difficult is it for those, who have riches, to enter into the kingdom of God!
Luk 18:25 it is easier for a cable to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
Luk 18:26 upon which the audience said, who then can be saved?
Luk 18:27 Jesus answer'd, by divine assistance men may do that which would be otherwise impossible.
Luk 18:28 Then said Peter, you see that we have left every thing to follow you.
Luk 18:29 Jesus answer'd, I declare unto you, no one has ever quitted house or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, upon account of the gospel-dispensation,
Luk 18:30 who shall not receive abundantly more even in this age, and everlasting life in the age to come.
Luk 18:31 Afterwards Jesus took the twelve aside, and said to them, now we are going to Jerusalem where all that the prophets have writ concerning the son of man shall be accomplished.
Luk 18:32 for he shall be delivered to the Gentiles by the Jews, who will treat him with mockery,
Luk 18:33 insult him, spit in his face, scourge him, and put him to death; and the third day he shall rise again.
Luk 18:34 but they comprehended nothing of all this: his discourse was a riddle to them, and they could not find out the meaning.
Luk 18:35 As they were near Jericho, a blind man happen'd to sit begging by the road,
Luk 18:36 who hearing the noise of a crowd passing by, ask'd what the matter was.
Luk 18:37 they told him, Jesus the Nazarene is passing by.
Luk 18:38 then he cry'd out, Jesus son of David, have pity on me.
Luk 18:39 those who led the way bid him hold his tongue. but he bawl'd out the louder, son of David have pity on me.
Luk 18:40 then Jesus stopp'd, and order'd them to bring the man to him, who being come nigh, he ask'd him,
Luk 18:41 what would you have me do for you? he said, Lord, I desire to have sight.
Luk 18:42 have sight, said Jesus, your faith has obtain'd you a cure.
Luk 18:43 and immediately he saw: and followed Jesus, glorifying God: and all the people, who were eye-witnesses, gave praise unto God.

Luk 19:1 As Jesus was pursuing his journey from Jericho,
Luk 19:2 one Zaccheus, a rich man, and collector-general of the customs,
Luk 19:3 was very desirous to see the person of Jesus, but could not for the crowd, he being of a low stature.
Luk 19:4 so he ran before, and climb'd up a mulberry-tree to view him; for he was to pass that way.
Luk 19:5 as soon as Jesus came at the place, he look'd up, and seeing him, Zaccheus, said he, make haste down; for I intend to dine at your house to-day.
Luk 19:6 so down he came in great haste, and gave Jesus a joyful reception.
Luk 19:7 upon seeing this, they all murmur'd, saying, he is going to be treated by a dissolute person.
Luk 19:8 but Zaccheus address'd himself to Jesus, and said, Lord, half my estate I give to the poor; and if I have wrong'd any man, I will give him four times the value.
Luk 19:9 then said Jesus, speaking of him, this day is salvation come to this family, since he is now become a true son of Abraham.
Luk 19:10 for the son of man is come to seek, and to save that which was lost.
Luk 19:11 Their attention being raised by this, Jesus pursued his discourse with a parable, occasion'd by their thinking, that, because he was advanc'd so nigh to Jerusalem, the kingdom of God would immediately commence.
Luk 19:12 a nobleman, said he, was going to travel to a foreign country, in order to have his kingdom confirm'd to him at his return.
Luk 19:13 and he called ten of his servants, to whom he deliver'd ten pounds: improve that, said he, till I return.
Luk 19:14 but he being hated by the citizens, after he was gone, they sent a deputation to court, to make this protest, "we will not have him for our king."
Luk 19:15 upon his return, being confirm'd king, he order'd the servants, he had trusted with the money, to appear, and inform him, what improvement each of them had made.
Luk 19:16 the first came and said, Lord, your one pound has gained ten more.
Luk 19:17 he answer'd, honest servant, that's well: since your industry has made so much of so little, I give you the government of ten cities.
Luk 19:18 then the second came, and said, Lord, your pound has produc'd five more.
Luk 19:19 his master replied, you shall be governor of five cities.
Luk 19:20 but another came and said, Lord, here's your money, which I laid up safe in a napkin.
Luk 19:21 for I was in fear of you, knowing you to be a hard master, who exact what you never gave, and reap where you have never sown.
Luk 19:22 wicked slave, said he, from your own mouth will I convict thee. "you knew I was a hard master, exacting what I never gave, and reaping where I never sowed:
Luk 19:23 " why then did you not lodge my money in the bank, that on my return I might have drawn it out with interest?
Luk 19:24 then he said to his attendants, take the one pound from him, and give it him, that gain'd ten.
Luk 19:25 but they objected, Lord, he has already ten pounds:
Luk 19:26 I tell you, said he, that to every one who improves, more shall be given: and he that makes no improvement, shall be stript of what he has.
Luk 19:27 as for those enemies of mine, who would not have me for their king, bring them here, and slay them in my presence.
Luk 19:28 After this discourse, Jesus pursued his journey towards Jerusalem.
Luk 19:29 when he was advanc'd near Bethphage, and Bethany, to the mountain call'd the Olives, he sent two of his disciples,
Luk 19:30 saying to them, go to the village opposite to you: at your entrance there, you will find a colt ty'd, that was never yet back'd: untie it and bring it here.
Luk 19:31 if any one should ask you, why you untie it, let this be your answer, because the Lord has occasion for it.
Luk 19:32 Accordingly the messengers went, and found the colt, as Jesus had told them.
Luk 19:33 as they were untying the colt, the owners said, why do you untie the colt?
Luk 19:34 they answer'd, because the Lord has occasion for it.
Luk 19:35 so they brought it to Jesus. and throwing their garments upon the colt, they mounted Jesus thereon.
Luk 19:36 and all the way, as he marched, they strewed with their clothes.
Luk 19:37 Just as he advanc'd to the declivity of the mountain of Olives, the whole troop of disciples began to express their joy in loud acclamations, praising God, for the many miracles they had seen.
Luk 19:38 "blessed be he, said they, whom the Lord hath sent to be our king. prosperity from heaven, and glory from the most high."
Luk 19:39 upon this some of the Pharisees, who were in the crowd, said to him, master, rebuke your disciples.
Luk 19:40 but he answer'd them, if they should be silent, the stones would exclaim.
Luk 19:41 as he drew nigh, he beheld the city, and bewail'd its fate,
Luk 19:42 in these words, "O that thou hadst consider'd, at least in this very day, the opportunity you had of being happy! but now alas! it is vanish'd from your eyes."
Luk 19:43 for the time will shortly come, when your enemies shall open their trenches before thee, hem you in, and closely besiege you:
Luk 19:44 they will level you to the ground, extirpate your inhabitants, and bury your buildings in ruins: because you have not consider'd the overtures I made you.
Luk 19:45 As soon as he entred into the temple, he drove out the sellers and buyers there: telling them it is written,
Luk 19:46 "my house is a house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves."
Luk 19:47 and he instructed the people daily in the temple, while the chief priests, the Scribes, and the rulers of the people, were contriving to take away his life.
Luk 19:48 but they could not find the means of effecting it; for all the populace were strongly attach'd to his doctrine.

Luk 20:1 One day, as he was instructing the people in the temple, and preaching the gospel, the chief priests, and the Scribes, with the rulers came up to him,
Luk 20:2 and thus accosted him, tell us by what authority do you act thus? and whence do you derive that authority?
Luk 20:3 Jesus answer'd, I will ask you one question;
Luk 20:4 tell me, the baptism of John, was it a divine or a human institution?
Luk 20:5 but they reason'd thus with themselves, if we should say, it was divine, he will reply, why then did not you believe him?
Luk 20:6 if we should assert, it was a human contrivance, the populace would stone us; for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.
Luk 20:7 they answer'd then, they did not know which it was.
Luk 20:8 Jesus replied, neither will I tell you by what authority I act thus.
Luk 20:9 Then he propos'd this parable to the people, a man planted a vineyard, let it out to husbandmen, and then went a travelling for some time.
Luk 20:10 at vintage, he sent a servant to the husbandmen, to demand the profits of the vineyard. but they beat him and sent him away empty.<
