English Translation of the Bible

1729 by Daniel Mace
Gal 1:1 Paul an apostle (not from men, nor by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the father who raised him from the dead) and all the brethren,
Gal 1:2 who are with me, unto the churches of Galatia: grace be to you, and peace from God the father,
Gal 1:3 and from our Lord Jesus Christ: who gave himself for our sins,
Gal 1:4 that he might deliver us from the vices of this present age, according to the will of God, even our father: to
Gal 1:5 whom be glory for ever and ever. amen. I wonder you have so soon deserted unto another gospel,
Gal 1:6 from me, who called you by the grace of Christ; this can be
Gal 1:7 owing to nothing but your being practised upon by some, who would overturn the gospel of Christ.
Gal 1:8 but tho' I, or an angel from heaven should preach any thing to you for gospel, different from the gospel I have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
Gal 1:9 as I said before, so say I now again, if any one preach any other thing to you for gospel, than what you have received, let him be accursed.
Gal 1:10 for do I now act in obedience to men, or to God? or do I seek to please men? if I had hitherto pleased men, I should not have been the servant of Christ.
Gal 1:11 I certify to you, brethren, that the gospel, which has been preached by me, is not the result of human artifice:
Gal 1:12 for I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Gal 1:13 you have heard of my former behaviour, whilst I was of the Jewish religion, with what excessive violence I persecuted the church of God, and laid it waste:
Gal 1:14 and that I made a greater proficiency in Judaism than many my contemporaries of my own nation, being an extraordinary zealot for the traditions of my forefathers.
Gal 1:15 but when it pleased God, who ordained me from my birth, and called me by his especial favour, to reveal his son to me,
Gal 1:16 that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not thereupon apply my self to any man;
Gal 1:17 neither went I up to Jerusalem, to those who were apostles before me: but I went immediately to Arabia, and returned again to Damascus.
Gal 1:18 After three years, I went up to Jerusalem, to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days:
Gal 1:19 but other of the apostles saw I none, except James the Lord's brother.
Gal 1:20 what I write to you, I call God to witness is all true:
Gal 1:21 afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia;
Gal 1:22 but was personally unknown to the churches of Christ in Judea,
Gal 1:23 who had only heard, that I, who formerly persecuted them, did now preach the gospel of faith, which I once endeavoured to suppress:
Gal 1:24 and they glorified God upon my account.
Gal 2:1 Fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem, with Barnabas, and took Titus also with me:
Gal 2:2 and I went up according to revelation, and communicated to them that gospel, which I preach among the Gentiles; but privately to those who were of note, lest the pains, that I have already taken, or may hereafter take in the gospel, should be in vain.
Gal 2:3 however, Titus who was then with me, being a Greek, was not compelled to be circumcised:
Gal 2:4 and as to the false brethren, who insidiously crept in to spy out our liberty which we have by Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into servitude;
Gal 2:5 I did not show them the lest compliance by way of submission, that the doctrine of the gospel might remain among you.
Gal 2:6 But as for those who were men of real eminency, how considerable soever they were heretofore, it does not any ways affect me; God accepts not the person of any man: for they who were of note, in conference with me, had nothing new to add.
Gal 2:7 on the contrary, when they perceived that I had the province of preaching the gospel to the Gentiles, as Peter had that of preaching it to the Jews,
Gal 2:8 (for he that had wrought powerfully in Peter with respect to his apostleship among the Jews, had also wrought powerfully in me upon account of the Gentiles:) and when James,
Gal 2:9 Peter, and John, who were esteemed to be pillars, perceived the favour that was bestowed on me, they admitted me and Barnabas into fellowship, and agreed, that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the Jews.
Gal 2:10 only they recommended to us to get collections for the poor in Judea: which I was very careful to do.
Gal 2:11 But when Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, for he was to be blamed.
Gal 2:12 for till certain Jews came thither from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, for fear of those, who were for circumcision:
Gal 2:13 and the rest of the Jews dissembled likewise with him, insomuch that Barnabas himself was carried away with their hypocrisy.
Gal 2:14 but when I saw, they conformed not their conduct to the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all: if you being a Jew, live after the manner of the Gentiles, and not according to that of the Jews, why do you constrain the Gentiles to judaize?
Gal 2:15 We are Jews by birth, and not of the sinful race of the Gentiles,
Gal 2:16 yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in him, and not by the works of the law, by which there is no justification.
Gal 2:17 Now if it be a sin to seek for justification by Christ, then is Christ the minister of sin, which cannot be.
Gal 2:18 on the contrary, if I re-establish what I have demolish'd, I show myself a prevaricator.
Gal 2:19 for by one law, I am dead to the other law, that I might live unto God:
Gal 2:20 I am crucified with Christ, it is not I that now live, but Christ that liveth in me; the life I have in this body I live by faith in the son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Gal 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if justification be by the law, Christ died to no purpose.
Gal 3:1 O foolish Galatians, who hath deluded you, you that have had the crucifixion of Jesus Christ represented to your view?
Gal 3:2 this one thing I desire to know of you, did you receive the spirit by the works of the law, or by the gospel preach'd to you?
Gal 3:3 have you so little understanding, as having begun in the spiritual doctrine of the gospel, to turn again to the law?
Gal 3:4 have you suffered so many things in vain?
Gal 3:5 if it be in vain. he therefore that ministreth the spirit to you, and worketh miracles among you, doth he it by the works of the law, or by the preaching of faith?
Gal 3:6 As Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness:
Gal 3:7 so hence ye know, that it is they who believe who are the children of Abraham.
Gal 3:8 and the scripture insinuating, that God would justify the Gentiles thro' faith, gave Abraham an intimation of the gospel in these words, " in thee shall all nations be blessed."
Gal 3:9 so that it is they who believe, who are blessed with Abraham, who did believe.
Gal 3:10 but they that rest themselves upon the works of the law, are obnoxious to the curse: for it is written, " cursed is every one, who continueth not in all things, which are written in the book of the law, to do them:"
Gal 3:11 but that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, is evident: for, " the just shall live by faith."
Gal 3:12 now the law does not justify by FAITH, but says, "he that DOES these things shall live by them."
Gal 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us. (for it is written, " cursed is every one, that hangeth upon a tree.")
Gal 3:14 that the blessing promised to Abraham might come on the Gentiles thro' Jesus Christ; that we by believing might receive the spirit that was promised.
Gal 3:15 Brethren, I speak according to the practice of men; contracts between men, when once ratified, cannot be disannulled or altered afterwards by any man.
Gal 3:16 now to Abraham and his offspring were the promises made. he does not say, "to offsprings," as if he spoke of many; but as speaking of one, "and to thy offspring," which means Christ.
Gal 3:17 this therefore I say, that the law, which was not till four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul the promise, that was ratified before by God, so as to set the promise afoot.
Gal 3:18 now if the right to the inheritance be from the law, it is no longer founded upon the promise; altho' God made a donation of it to Abraham by promise.
Gal 3:19 "To what purpose then was the law?" it was added as a check to transgressors, till the offspring should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels with the intervention of a mediator.
Gal 3:20 now a mediator supposes two parties, of which God is but one.
Gal 3:21 Is the law then opposite to the promises? by no means. for if there had been a law given, which could have given life, certainly justification should have been by the law.
Gal 3:22 but the scripture has declar'd all guilty of sin, that the blessing promised on condition of faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
Gal 3:23 but before faith came, we were shut up together as prisoners under the custody of the law, 'till faith was to be revealed.
Gal 3:24 so that the law was our school-master to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Gal 3:25 but now faith being come, we are no longer under a pedagogue.
Gal 3:26 for you are all the sons of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Gal 3:27 for as many of you as have been baptized into christianity, have been invested as christians.
Gal 3:28 there is now no distinction of Jew or Greek, of bond or free, of male or female: for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Gal 3:29 and if you belong to Christ, you are Abraham's offspring, and his heirs by virtue of the promise.
Gal 4:1 Now I say, that the heir, as long as he is a child, is in a state of servitude, tho' he is to be lord of all;
Gal 4:2 being under tutors and guardians, 'till the time prefix'd by his father.
Gal 4:3 even so we, whilst we were children, were in a state of servitude to the elements of the world. but when the time appointed was accomplished,
Gal 4:4 God sent forth his own son born of a woman, and subject to the law, to redeem those,
Gal 4:5 who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
Gal 4:6 and because ye are sons, God has sent forth the spirit of his son into your hearts, crying Abba, that is, father;
Gal 4:7 so that thou art no longer a bond servant, but a son: and if a son, then an heir of God thro' Christ.
Gal 4:8 When you did not know God, you did service to those, who in reality are no Gods; but now that you know God,
Gal 4:9 or rather that you are favoured by him, how can ye turn again to the weak and beggarly elements of the law, to which you desire again to be in bondage?
Gal 4:10 observing as you do, the days, the moons, the feasts and years.
Gal 4:11 you make me apprehensive, that the labour I have bestowed upon you will be all in vain.
Gal 4:12 I beseech you, brethren, be as I am, for I was as you are.
Gal 4:13 It is not you that have done me any injury: tho' you knew through what infirmity of the flesh I heretofore preached the gospel to you,
Gal 4:14 yet you did not despise me for the trial which attended my person, nor treated me with scorn; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.
Gal 4:15 what benedictions did you then pour out upon me! for I bear you witness, that, had it been practicable, you would have pulled out your very eyes, and given them to me.
Gal 4:16 am I now become your enemy in continuing to tell you the truth?
Gal 4:17 they court your affection, but not in a fair way; for they design to exclude me, that you might have the greater esteem for them.
Gal 4:18 but it is just you should cultivate my affection for you upon all proper occasions, and not only when I am present with you.
Gal 4:19 my dear children, how am I in pain, till Christ be formed in you?
Gal 4:20 I wish I could be present this very moment with you, and suit my discourse accordingly, for I stand in doubt what to think of you.
Gal 4:21 But tell me, you that are so willing to be under the law, why don't you consider the law?
Gal 4:22 for it is there written, Abraham had two sons, the one by a bond-maid, the other by a free-woman.
Gal 4:23 he, who was of the bond-woman, was born according to the ordinary course of nature; but he, who was of the free-woman, was born by virtue of the promise.
Gal 4:24 these things have an allegorical meaning: the two women signify the two covenants, the one from mount Sinai, which is represented by Agar, whose children were born in a state of servitude.
Gal 4:25 this Agar answers to the Jerusalem now in being, for she is in servitude with her children:
Gal 4:26 but the heavenly Jerusalem is represented by the free-woman, who is the mother of us all.
Gal 4:27 for it is written, "rejoice thou barren, that bearest not; break out into loud acclamations, thou that hast not the travels of childbirth, for more are the children of the desolate, than of her that hath an husband."
Gal 4:28 Now we, my brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of the promise.
Gal 4:29 but as then, he that was born in the ordinary course of nature, persecuted him, who was born by an extraordinary power; even so it is now.
Gal 4:30 but what saith the scripture? "cast out the bond-woman and her son; for the son of the bond-woman shall not share the inheritance with the son of the free-woman."
Gal 4:31 so then, my brethren, we are not children of the bond-woman, but of the free-woman, by virtue of that freedom which Christ has procur'd for us.
Gal 5:1 Stand fast therefore, and be not hampered again with the yoke of bondage.
Gal 5:2 take notice, 'tis I Paul declare it to you, that if you are circumcised, Christ shall be of no advantage to you.
Gal 5:3 for I testify to every man that is circumcised, that he is under an obligation to perform the whole law.
Gal 5:4 Christ is of no use to you, whoever of you seek to be justified by the law; you have lost all interest in the gospel-dispensation.
Gal 5:5 but as for us, our minds are possessed with the hopes of justification by faith.
Gal 5:6 for in the christian-dispensation, neither circumcision avails any thing, nor uncircumcision, but an active benevolent faith.
Gal 5:7 You set out well in your course: who hath obstructed your progress in the truth?
Gal 5:8 this opinionativeness does not come from him that called you.
Gal 5:9 a little leaven affects the whole mass.
Gal 5:10 I have confidence in you, that, through the Lord, you will be of the same mind with me, so that he who troubles you shall fall under the censure he deserves, whoever he be.
Gal 5:11 as for me, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why am I yet persecuted? for then there would not be so much objection to the doctrine of the cross.
Gal 5:12 I wish they who unsettle you were entirely circumcised.
Gal 5:13 for, brethren, you have been called to liberty. only abuse not this freedom as a pretext to vice, but in offices of love be as servants one to another.
Gal 5:14 for all the law is comprehended in this one precept, "thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."
Gal 5:15 but if you bite and tear one another, take heed that you be not consumed by one another.
Gal 5:16 I say then, conduct yourselves by the spirit, and you will not then gratify the animal passions.
Gal 5:17 for the vicious desires are contrary to those of the spirit, and the inclinations of the spirit are contrary to those of the animal part; these are opposite to each other, so that you do not the things that you would.
Gal 5:18 but if you are governed by the spirit, you are not subject to the law.
Gal 5:19 now the effects of vicious passions are manifestly these, fornication, uncleanness,
Gal 5:20 brutality, idolatry, poisoning, enmities, quarrels, emulations, animosities, strife, seditions, factions, envyings,
Gal 5:21 drunkenness, revellings, and such like, concerning which I forewarn you now, as heretofore I have done, that they who practise such vices, shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Gal 5:22 but the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, sweetness of disposition, beneficence, faithfulness, meekness, temperance:
Gal 5:23 against such there is no law.
Gal 5:24 now they who belong to Christ, have crucified the animal nature with the affections and passions thereof.
Gal 5:25 if we live by the spirit, let us regulate our actions by the spirit:
Gal 5:26 let us not be vain-glorious, provoking one another, envying one another.
Gal 6:1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, do you, who are spiritual, restore him with all gentleness, taking heed lest you yourselves be overcome by temptation.
Gal 6:2 bear with one another's infirmities, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
Gal 6:3 for if a man thinks himself to be considerable, when he is not, he deceives himself.
Gal 6:4 but let every one bring his own work to the test, and then he will have matter of glorying in himself alone, and not in another.
Gal 6:5 for every man must be answerable for his own actions.
Gal 6:6 Let him that is instructed in the word freely communicate his good things to him that teaches him.
Gal 6:7 be not deceived, God will not be mocked: for what a man soweth, that shall he also reap:
Gal 6:8 he that soweth to his vices, shall reap the deadly fruit of his vices; but he that sows to the spirit, shall of the spirit reap everlasting life.
Gal 6:9 let us then not be weary in doing good, for in due season we shall reap, if we be not tired.
Gal 6:10 therefore as we have opportunity, let us do good offices to all men, especially to the family of believers.
Gal 6:11 You see how long a letter I have writ to you with my own hand.
Gal 6:12 they who desire to make a figure in the world, constrain you to be circumcised, only to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ.
Gal 6:13 for even they who are circumcised, do not themselves observe the law in other respects; but they dedesire to have you circumcised, that they may have matter of glorying upon that account.
Gal 6:14 but far be it from me that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world is as contemptible to me, as I am to the world.
Gal 6:15 for in the dispensation of Jesus Christ, neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but the new creation.
Gal 6:16 as many as walk by this rule, peace and mercy be on them, even upon the Israel of God.
Gal 6:17 from henceforth let no man give me trouble; for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.
Gal 6:18 Brethren, the favour of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. amen.
